Default Mk2 with 4.2 engine

Hi all (my first post).
I have been lucky to get an auto Mk2 that has been sitting in a garage for 13yrs - I am doing preparatory work before I try a start.
It is fitted with an XJ6 S1 4.2 (originally a 3.4) and triple carbs too.
It was partially in pieces : I have just put the restored interior back in and numerous other tasks.; havent got it to run yet.
1. I am not sure if it has the original DG250 gearbox or BW 8 etc - how can I tell what it is?
2. The Mk2 column auto change is very difficult to move. If a later box, perhaps thats the problem
3. The car has a double choke cable - is that was E-Types had with 3 SUs?
Any comments would be appreciated!!!
Cheers,
M

8 out of 10 4.2 engines suffer block cracking.

If a DG box ther shall be a small name plate at the RHD of the box detailing DGXXX
It it is a later Type 35 box it may be identified if you provide a picture.

Even if the box is of wrong type the lever shall move without any significant resistant. If hard check cables/links sometins is maladjusted.

The 35 is easily identified. It has an alloy (Aluminium) casing. Not cast iron. It cannot take the torque of a 4.2 engine which is why the 420 moved to the Model 8 transmission.

Thx Glyn - I have the engine number which is early XJ6 - my suspicion is that it is a Model 8....

In March 1970, it was announced that the Borg-Warner Model 8 automatic transmission, which the XJ6 had featured since 1968, would be replaced on the 4.2-litre XJ6 with the Borg-Warner Model 12. The rotten 2.8 litre version retained the Model 8. The 2.8 XK engine suffered everything from piston to valve failure.
