Some time ago I asked for ideas about replacing the ugly silencer that hides the engine of the Mark 1. I came up with a solution. Steel tube replacing silncer and shined up the cam shaft covers, carburetor pots, air intake manifolk and radiator cap. Real bling now.
I understand the original "silencer" is an Air Filter, with an actual paper filter inside. Not exactly a work of beautiful art, but effective.
The same one fitted to the S type from 1963 to 1968.
Jose, I forget the details, but on some early cars, the box on top of the engine is a silencer without a filter inside. They had an oil bath filter in the LH front wing. See the SNG link below.

On 3.4 Mk1s, it is just a silencer, the air filter is an oil-bath unit mounted under the passenger-side wing. The silencer cannot be opened and it doesn't hold a filter.
like many others, i replaced the entire assembly with a couple of pancake style air cleaners that attach directly to the carbs. no re-tuning necessary in my case. full access to the carbs now. lovely!
and some day i may even removed that ugly mounting bracket it was attached to.
