power steer box vs rack

If its a late '68, then it should have the Marles Varamatic steering box that provides a variable steering ratio. (more road wheel movement as you go on lock using a specially cut worm gear in the box). The power assistance is provided by a slave cylinder with very, (very) short rack operating on a pinion. Effort is governed by a torsion-bar-operated valve, same as most power steering.
Its a good box and I had one on my Rover V8 in the 80s. No point really in swapping to a rack except the parts situation.

Wikipedia is wrong, it is Varamatic. Of course modern racks now have the variable ratio like my X350, but nobody notices it anymore, there is so much technology in the modern car we are no longer interested.
Putting a modern rack onto a Mark 2 which is not built for it is possible, but one has to be careful with the mounting position to avoid steering kick-back.
