Trying to ID switches on S type dash
__________________________________________________ ___________
Apologies, a few minutes searching shows me all the switches including the one under the dash (hazard lights) are standard/options.
__________________________________________________ ___________
To the left (LHD) of my speedo/tach I have a couple of lights/switches, see below.
Can anyone confirm whether these are all aftermarket or whether some of them were options?
The fact that they all share the same font/style makes me think they are at least all manufactured by the same company.

The top (intermediate speed switch) and the bottom brake light switch are factory for sure.
The brake light switch glows red when the park brake is on and when the brake fluid level drops to a low, but still safe level.
There is a "floater" switch with two wires coming out the top of the brake fluid reservoir that also operates the light.
The middle one , which I have never seen (someone with an S Type will probably know better) looks to be factory as well.
It looks like it had a rear defogger _ interesting...
Note that it looks like someone defeated the intermediate speed switch and turned it into a semi manual choke.
Your carburetor choke had a thermostatic switch text to the thermostat.
The switch turned off and on depending how cold or how hot the coolant was.
This switch activated a solenoid that opened up an extra port to allow more fuel to enter the intake manifold to enrichen the mixture.
The switch sometimes turned the choke off too soon and the car stalled or it would stay on too long and the car would run to rich (the choke would stay on when it wasn't needed).
The other annoying and most common problem with that switch (Otter Switch) is if you took the car for a short run, the switch would turn off as normal when the coolant got hot enough. But after the short run and the car was parked for 20 minutes (enough time for the coolant to get cold enough for the Otter switch to come on). It would activate the choke again when the engine was still warm enough where it didn't need to be choked and the engine would flood.
It left many people stranded and most people didn't understand the workings of this choke system, it became a very annoying indeed.
People would by-pass this automatic switch and put a manual one in, turning the choke off and on when the driver saw fit to do so.
In your photo you can see the last parson even labeled it.
Here's an explanation from Jose of what the Intermediate Speed Switch does:

all three are factory / originals. The one in the middle is for the optional rear windscreen defroster, it was not standard equipment, iy was an optional accessory.
the fourth one seen mounted in a metal panel under the dash is also original, it is for emergency / Hazard Flashers. The Hazard Switch addon started in 1966, my 1965 S type did not have it.
yes, it looks like the Second Gear Hold Switch was turned into a Choke On-Off.

Thanks, I will include them all in the restoration and try to revert the Intermediate speed hold to factory spec.
The choke functionality sounds a pain!
The interior really is a bit of a mess but the car came with a complete second set of dash/instruments, wood and door cards. That set of wood is a good bit better but still needs reveneering.
Seriously considering trying at it myself with a reveneering bag. I might play with that one winter.
I must be turning into an old geezer. My 'formative years' were spent in muscle cars (even when back in the UK) and hot rods and now that I have hit 50 suddenly nostalgia and originality is in fashion! Go figure!

The choke works well enough when you put a manual switch in.
You can add your own switch and put it where ever you want.
I would make a small bracket and place it between the hazard panel and the steering column.
It looks like there is just enough room in there with out it getting switched on/off accidently.
@ Jose
When ever I see an S Type here in Canada, they all had fog lamps _ never actually seen the grills in real life.

TheSweeney, to be able to reuse the 2nd Gear Hold feature of these cars, you need to have the original DG-250 transmission that was fitted to the car. If the transmission has been replaced, it will not work.

Thanks, I put the car up in the air after buying it and managed to confirm that the transmission ID plate does match the data plate on the firewall. Hopefully that means I am good to go, unless someone added that switch at some point.
