Question 1984 XJ6 Vanden Plas

Hello

Let me start by stating I know NOTHING about Jaguars. Regardless, I am in need of some help. A friend of mine is selling a 1984 XJ6 Vanden Plas. He is asking $2k.

The body is in excellent condition in my opinion, Very little rust (maybe 95% rust free), with only a door ding in the passenger side. The car starts and runs fine. The owner said he would have someone look at the brakes. It will need tires (the one thing I can handle by myself).

I've heard horror stories of not being able to find parts, and repairs costing a small fortune. Realistically, is this something I should even get into?

I apologize for my ignorance. ANY help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Beck7790,

Good to have you here with us at Jaguar forums. There's two ways to run a Jaguar - do the maintenance yourself or pay someone with the appropriate expertise to do it for you. If you choose the latter, it will be a comfortable but costly ride. If you want to learn how to maintain it yourself, all the help and information is available on the forum.

The 1984 XJ6 VdP will be a Series III:

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj6-xj12-series-i-ii-iii-16/ to the XJ6 & XJ12 Series I, II & III section for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

You can also visit the US Mid West Region section by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/mid-west-us-il-ia-mi-mn-mo-oh-wi-39/
to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forum.

Welcome to the forum and the Jag family! No such thing as stupid questions here - many start with little knowledge on the brand but gain a ton through the how-to's, downloads, on-line docs, discussions, etc.

Recommend checking out the XJ6/XJ12 forum
XJ6 & XJ12 Series I, II & III - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum

Also check out the MidWest regional section.

Add a signature using the User CP in the upper left, include Model and year so techs can properly advise when asking questions

Enjoy

If you're a decent DIY mechanic most repairs can be handled easily and fairly inexpensively. Parts are generally easy to find and often not much more expensive than an "ordinary" car.

If you have to pay a repair shop to do all the work then things get expesnsive in a hurry.

A $2000, 29 year old used car is gonna need help no matter what make and this car is obviously no exception. Not best way to break into Jaguar ownership unless you are actually looking for a project. If that's the case, great.....it's a lot of fun bringing these cars back from the brink.

Otherwise I suggest setting your sights higher and look for a better candidate that'll give more pleasure and require less work. If you can spend $6000-$8000 you stand a decent chance of getting a nice Jag that doesn't need too much work

"There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Jaguar"

Cheers
DD
