Default 2001 jaguar xk8 gearbox fault/restricted performance

I officially hate this piece of **** car. It all of a sudden went into limp mode as I was driving one day. Now when I put it in drive, the engine has to rev up to 3000 rpm before it does a hard shift into what seems to be 5th gear. I say this because it pulls off very slowly and it never shifts. GEARBOX FAULT/RESTRICTED PERFORMANCE, is what it says. I put in brand new plugs and a brand new battery. Any suggestions before I start parting it out or find a Louisiana lake to bury it in? 318-294-7246

Welcome.

That ZF transmission is well known to have issues if the fluid is not changed regularly. His direction to the correct area will give you the answers.

Welcome to the forum.

Your symptom sounds like the front drum inside the trans has cracked/broken and will need to replaced or rebuilt, known issue with those transmissions.

I got a subtle hint you were upset at the time.

There's three regular issues on the XK8/XKR:

1. cooling system (water pump impeller/thermostat)
2. tensioners (early plastic type)
3. transmission (so called 'sealed for life')

With these checked/resolved, the XK8/XKR is a great car to own and run.

There's a couple of suggestions in the above replies on where to start troubleshooting the GEARBOX FAULT issue. I think you could be looking at a transmission rebuild.

Frustrating and annoying but worth considering as an alternative to the Louisiana lake. Post the question in XK8/XKR forum and you will get help and advice on repairs.
