Default 2008 XJ - Intermittent Petroleum Smell in the Cabin

Hello.... I just joined the forum tonight, as I have an issue I'm trying to figure out. I have 2008 XJ Vanden Plas and I recently began smelling what I would describe as a petroleum-based smell inside the cabin when I'm driving. I read the thread below, but I'm just not sure if what that user described as a "raw fuel smell" is the same thing I'm smelling. What I'm smelling doesn't smell like gasoline when you're standing at the gas pump, nor does it smell like exhaust fumes. I really don't know how to describe it other than a petroleum or industrial (factory) type smell. It's happens quite randomly, and I have not been able to identify any common circumstance in which it happens such as hot days vs. cool days, highway driving vs. city driving, short drives vs. long drives, etc. It's a pretty intense smell inside the cabin and it typically lasts at least several minutes; then it goes away. I would really appreciate any guidance to help me figure out what the issue is. Has anyone experienced this?

Welcome. I've experienced what you describe, but on another car. It was an oil leak. Valve cover gasket would occasionally drip onto the hot exhaust and the odor would come into the cabin from the fresh air vent at the base of the windshield. I didn't see anything on the ground right away because it would burn off, but later as the leak got worse I started seeing it on the ground and then I was able to figure out where to look. Sounds to me like you may have a similar situation as 14 years old is about the age where seals and gasket materials start to go. Hopefully somebody with your same model will come along and know exactly what it is. Good luck.

Hello,
I agree, there's Nothing quite as annoying as an unidentified mystery smell that might mean something is amiss.
I hope you can find the cause soon, but as I don't have a car like yours, I'm afraid I'm no help at all.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Welcome to the forums MrSteve4,

Good to have you with us.

I can see you've already found your way to the X350 forum with this issue so there's no need for a link to it from me. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues. You can also use the US Midwest Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/us-midwest-39/ to find other members in your region.

Please read the guidance for new members ( https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...ned-up-241802/ ) which answers many of the most frequent questions about getting started.

Enjoy the forums.
