Default Another keen Kiwi driver

Hi! I'm Graeme from Hamilton NZ.

18mths ago I brought a 2007 NZ new X type 2.1 litre with nearly 200,000km. It had all the accessories, black (carbon fibre?) dash and panelling. It must've had seat covers most of it's life as the black leather seats were like new. It's front wheel drive and I'm not aware of any major work done previously. It had new tyres, brake discs and pads on it when I purchased. It had spent a couple of years at the main Auckland dealer and then had had one owner before me.

It was my work vehicle for a year or so before I retired. With a passion for leather belts I did manage to cause some wear on the drivers seat! After being solidly backed into just after purchased, I had to replace the radiator with a new one. It seems to be sensitive to flooding of the firewall side spark plugs if parked on our steep drive in heavy rain. I eventually replaced the back three coils and spark plugs ( and the front set too). The coolant tank had been replaced some time before I brought the car. The water pump bearing collapsed with fortunately only a mild overheat. Recently the small brake booster finned fluid cooler ruptured. And currently we leaked transmission fluid out a fractured inlet to the cooler. Maybe due to excessive air con fan vibration now being attended to. The run flat tyres on it don't give me enough warning of punctures now having wrecked two very good tyres by running on after punctures. Now that I not touring all over the countryside in my job, hopefully this wont be an issue again.

My previous work vehicle was a 2000 Ford Courier xtra cab well deck ute. This Thai assembled vehicle finally had a worn slipping clutch after 444,000km so I sold it rather than repair. Besides brakes pads and discs as well as the odd suspension bush, my only mechanical issue was a failed petrol pump just after I purchased it when it was a couple of years old at 100,000km. Even the often neglected paintwork had a shine after a polish and despite never being garaged there was no rust.

As a mechanical back yarder who mostly learnt on V8s (flathead and o/h), or English and Continental cars of the 50's and 60's, I confess to be a bit blown away by modern computer controlled complicated mechanics. I might have brought that V12 XJS but the daughter said that the grandchildren couldn't ride with me unless I had modern child seat mounts.

To me Jaguars generally are great for travelling but just too big especially if one spends a bit of time negotiating the hilly suburbs of Wellington etc. Those modern micro cars have their place down there and in cities. The X type offered a good compromise of a smaller medium size with weight on the road and jag suspension for a good ride, very superior modern mechanicals and computer control. 2nd generation post 2004 was an upgrade ironing out some earlier problems. I'd like to have the 4wd but scarcely a necessity in our climate and opted for the less complicated 2wd with the 2.1 litre motor. It has lived up to all expectations. Best fuel consumption of 8 litre/100km often averaging 10 litre/100 on a tankful but maybe 12 to 13 on all town running. Although I had noticed that shifting my daughters household effects 600km in a large non aero dynamic tandem axle trailer doubled fuel consumption. It was my decision to buy as modern as possible even with higher km. Unbelievable that after 10 years such a car only costs $4600, 10% of it's new price. Despite the many tales of woe and the difficulties some have had, I am encouraged that others report 200 and 300,000 miles sometimes luckily with no major hick ups. Time will tell whether my faith in the Jag brand and this sophisticated model are justified.

Regards

The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.
