Talking considering Used S-type of XF

Hello Forum members, I'm new to the forum.
I live in So. California where there are plenty luxury automobiles. I currently drive and DIY repair a Mercedes SUV. I see there are plenty of nice looking S-types xf's one the market. I am a Diy mechanic. I'm looking for a Jaguar as a second car. Comparing a later series S-type with less that a 100K to a XF with the same miles. Is the xf too complicated technically for the DIY owner? In either case I'd like drive, not a garage queen. So far I have driven a 2005 3.0 l s-type and was impressed with the solid feel. Solid ride, enough power, great breaking but light steering. Most of these in good condition now are under 5K.
Thanks,
Hirst

Welcome to the Forums.

My opinion, and it is just that, and I have had 2, and pushing 75yo, AND, no one touches my cars, if I cannot fix it, it aint broken.

S Type every day, from X200 to X204. OK, they all got their little niggles, but still able to suck and seek issues WITHOUT a damn computer plugged into it.

The later you go the more you fall into the category I call "laptop on wheels", no matter the badge on the front.

Good luck.

Chassis-wise, in many ways the XF is an extension of the S-type. I would suggest spending a little while in both the XF and S-type technical forums and see what issues pop up and if your DIY skills and diagnostic skills/hardware are up to the task...

Welcome aboard.

Having run both S-types & XF, I'd go for a 2004 on but which engine are you looking at ? They're more or less the same platform but avoid the XF's 20" wheels.

Hello, Hirst,
With the help of these forums almost No Jaguar is beyond DIY. (I had to add the "almost" just in case there's one I don't know about.)
Members here have seen it all, done it all and even invented some of the fixes to keep these kitties on the road and Puuurrrrring.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Hello Fellow Jaguar enthusiasts,
Well, It's taking some time, but that's a good thing. I've had a chance to drive the 2016 fx twice. On my second drive i was more impressed, considered buying the car, but the price was more than I wanted to invest in a second kick around car. My conclusion that the FX is a great driving car, in fact a muscle car but ultimately lacking the charm and softer styling of the S-type. Also the FX has more going on and more complex, so a bigger challenge for a DIY. I've also driven an S-type twice. A 2005 3.0 with the sport trim interior. Very nice driving with a record of dealer service. Boy the 3.0 has a nice sound and good acceleration when pushed a little!
I'm ready to buy the s-type but the dealer first has to rectify a gas leak. Looks like a gas pump, seal or both. I actually have two 100K mile cars I could purchase. Both purchases have been delayed by service issues the other being the failure of a Climate control board. I think at this point I'm going for the 3.0 Sport with aluminum instead of wood trim and firmer Reccaro esque perferrated leather seating. but good history. More waiting of course.
I hope to have made a purchase in a week or so.
Hirst

Hello Forum Members,
Well, I bit the bullet. I purchase what i think is a gem of an S-type. Last week I drove thru Southern California to drive and purchase a car I was eyeing. Kind a fancy and sporty together, a white 2007 S-type with 99k on the odometer. Interior and exterior is great. Not a ding from a shipping cart. I would say 9.5 on the body and 9 for the interior. Like most luxury autos I believe it has suffered from some delayed maintenance. My plan is to do both engine oil and tranny service myself. In time I,ll do the waterpump, belt and hoses. The car is missing the lower dust pannel so I'll fab one out of aluminum if I can source one locally. I'm sure I'll seek this forums help for the diy projects. Quite a dream to drive, like true luxury sports sedan. I'll make posts of my progress.
Thanks to fellow posters for the tips,
hirst
