Smile Hello from a Newbie: 1991 Jaguar XJS Classic

A couple months ago, my dear Lydia wanted to get her 1998 Acura 3.2 TL painted. We went to a body shop and the guy was very kind and honest, but told us his shop would be too expensive... He recommended we try Maaco. Boy, am I ever glad he did...

Off to Maaco we went. When we pulled in to the parking lot, I spied a beautiful Jaguar XJS. I decided to play a joke on Lydia's brother and asked her to pose with our dear Pomeranian Einstein beside the car - so we could send him the photo and tell him my fledgling web design business was doing great!

Well - Lydia went in to speak with Pat about the paint job, and Ken (Ken & Pat are married and collect classic cars)... Ken and I chatted about the Jag. She was to be sold to a consignment dealer the next day (Ken is totally honest... so this is absolutely true!!!) One thing led to another and Ken took me for a ride...

...we got back form the ride. Pat had given Lydia a greta deal on getting her Acura painted. I told Lydia that the Jag was amazing. Lydia told me that the Jag was mine!!! She had been talking with Pat about how much I loved cars and Jaguars in particular (although I had never come close to owning one).

I was happily shocked!!!!

Thus began our journey with MAXIE.

I have worked in the computer field for decades and am a huge science fiction fan. So of course I had to name her. MAXIE is Multiprocessor Autonomous eXperimental Intelligence Emulation. And of course she is an eXperimental Joint Sentient, or XJ-S. (It says so right on the back).

Truth be told, Maxie has an updated A/C system that takes modern Freon, and a wonderful JVC stereo with Bluetooth. So she interfaces with my Trusty iPhone, providing speakerphone capability and access to millions of songs, as well as essentially the sum total of the knowledge of humanity. All under voice control! So he is indeed an eXperimental Joint Sentient. I wish you could change Siri's name to Maxie... but this is not YET available from Apple. Perhaps it will be. For now I guess Maxie's middle name is Siri??? I did program her with a British accent, of course!!!

We put one of Einstein's doggie beds in the back seat - a little boat-shaped one. In other cars, he rides "way in the back". But in Maxie, he is right between Lydia and me. I think that Einstein considers Maxie his car, and he has a human driver (me) and attendant (Lydia).

We have been to some fun places... one was Van Sant Historic Airfield, for a nice picnic and Movie Night. On the way home, Lydia and Einstein drifted off to Dreamland, while I danced with Maxie. She is simply a joy to drive - the symbiosis is far closer than I have ever experienced before, and this includes several motorcycles...

Little electrical problems, of course!!! She needed a tuneup and I was amazed that our local (wonderful) shop Fitzgerald's Tire and Auto have a technician Greg who is specially trained for "unique" engines. He did a greta job, and now she starts every time and runs beautifully.

We got water in the glove box. Weird!!! Probably a clogged A/C vert tube? Or possibly need sealant around the windscreen gasket?

I have installed a through-the-glass Ham Radio antenna on the back window. No holes or magnetic bases on her finish! And the signal is coupled by a capacitor formed by the inner and outer mounting plates. So Maxie actually does have a Flux Capacitor.

I feel very fortunate. I feel very blessed...
best,
-john & Maxie

Hello, John,
Interesting you should come up with that meaning for XJ-S. Or the name of your car for that matter. Isn't naming things such fun?!

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.
