Hello. Thanks for letting me join
I have a 1998 XJ8 3.2. it was my 50th birthday present. I reall love the old girl, But just lately she' started giving me problems. (Im talking about the jag by the way, Not the wife).
I now have messages as follows. Gear box fault. Stability control failure. And it won' let me move the gear lever. When it will move it goes into gear with a clunk, and has reduced power.
someone suggsted a new battery would sort it, So a new battery was fitted, it made no difference at all.
at the same time it started to blow headlight bulbs. So I also checked the voltage from the alternator at the battery terminals. Low and behold it was charging at 19.2 bolts, also it was cooking the battery.
is there anyone on here who has had the same problem, if so what do I need to do.
hope someone can help me, I haven' been able.to use it for ages, and I can' afford high garage prices.
Regards
Chris Fisher

Welcome to the forum Chris,
Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.
The alternator clearly needs attention but you will then need a code reader to determine the causes of the reduced power. Difficulty in moving the gear lever is usually a failed interlock solenoid.
Follow this link XJ XJ8 / XJR ( X308 ) - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the X308 forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.
Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.
You can also visit the UK & Eire Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/uk-eire-68/ to find other members in your region.
Enjoy the forums.
