Default Looking for mechanic in Northern CA

Hello all, have my fourth addition of Jag, an 06 Super 8. I have a bad tensioner and the shops around here that I have spoken to seem to not have any idea about hours or cost. One shop said, 'between $500 to $8,000" I for some reason thought that if a person works on a make of car for some time, they might just have a pretty good idea as to what fails or could fail commonly. Not in the practice of passing out blank checks these days. Anybody have any suggestions? I have a bit of rattle for 2 seconds upon cold startup after sitting for days. 114k on the clock, 10-40 castol in the engine

Welcome to the forums DrWalsingham,

That's the kind of estimate a shop gives when they really don't want the job.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-x350-x358-28/ to the X350 forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Please add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also use the US Western Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/us-western-38/ to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

Graham

Welcome to teh Forums.

OUCH, and the 4.2 is not known for tensioner issues.

Good luck.

Grant's comment prompted me to think - are you using an OE oil filter or an aftermarket equivalent with the same non-return valve which ensures rapid build up of oil presssure on start up? If not, you may not actually have a mechanical issue.

Good call, I am using a Mann-Filter W 713/29 should I order the Jag filter? I did think about the anti drain back. What is a good source for these other than ***********?

Given the cost of premium oil, I've never worried about the additional cost of using OE filters. I don't know the comparative pricing structure in the US but I just get them from my Jaguar Dealer.

Hello,
There are independent shops out there who are hungry enough to accept work on a car over 10 years old but you have to search for them. Most of them work for the love of the craft as much as the money, or maybe more so. The best way to find one is to ask around; ask friends who drive older cars where they get work done, relatives, neighbors, the guys at the gas station, coffee shop, anyone you can think of whose opinion you might give credence.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.
