Default Lurking in the Cincinnati area

Hello all,

My name is Mike I'm married I have 3 children 3 and under. I'm currently 31 and looking to get into my first jag. I've owned Mercedes and Volvo in the past as far as "luxury" brands go. Currently the family car is a tuned 2013 explorer sport and my car is a fairly heavily modded 2012 GTI. It puts down over 350hp to the wheels and scoots through the 1/4 mile in upper 12sec range. The Jag will be an addition to the garage and primarily used as my "me time" car till the kids are all old enough that we trust leaving them with a sitter long enough for a night out with just the wife and I. Looking at getting into an F-Type. I came to the forums to make an educated decision as to which is the best fit for me. The v8 models are all out of my budget so I'm looking primarily at the S or the AWD S I may find if I'm in the market for RWD a base offering would suit me just fine though.

Thanks for having me I look forward to reading around and making a final decision in the next few months.

Don’t talk to the Dealership to help you make such a decision. Your “human” situation is much like mine.
By “human”, I mean that your post just revealed you have a clear assessment of the life you are in, of the lifestyle you’re aware you can reserve for yourself, of the way in which you plan to use your car with your lady (VERY important when considering an F-type or XE), and of the kind of cars you’ve mastered so far.
…These are concepts and facts Dealerships TEND not to have real time to understand or help you weigh---they will tend to just “yes” you to death and say “sure, try this one out”.

I owned only a Toyota Corolla before this first Jaguar. The ‘96 Corolla was small, but was a four-door with black satin metallic exterior and “oak” interior, because I wanted any lady to feel elegant stepping out of that thing, and I wanted the ability to drive up to any slick club at night and have the car represent some kind of sophistication.
Passengers loved that car, due mostly to my choice of colors and maintenance. Otherwise, it would have just been… an economy compact car.

It’s that option to be “elegantly-hot” any time I want, that I always want to reach for. Both F-Type and XE are vicious in acceleration, and will make you forget the other quick cars you’ve owned (just as any I once owned). So don’t worry focusing on speed/acceleration performance with either Jaguar model.

My Jaguar choice was the XE, an here’s why. I needed the car to be “nightclub-ready” on a moment’s notice, since I entertain a lady from time to time, and have no children as yet. But I also need it for regular city commute, in a city that is notorious for trying to damage exotic cars they don’t understand, and steal cars that are too sleek to park on the streets.

The Volvo S60 was the competition I had considered buying as well, because I knew both cars can look “mature and sophisticated” enough when I drive my lady up to the restaurant, not just showy and superficial like a sports car. You’ll have to decide if you and your wife represent slick-n-wild, or deep-sexy-masterful, when you arrive at an evening event.

Deep-sexy-masterful was my preference. The XE has an intimidating front, and in the right colors looks animal-like around the headlights.

It’s my correct car because any sporty-cramped feeling in the interior, is limited to the back-seats. The front seats are an intimate-feeling area a lady can enjoy on an evening drive.
It’s body lines are easily obscured when you mix in among other cars in a busy street or parked on the block. This gives it a stealthy personality at night, that thieves can’t spot in the city.
Every pedestrian that has walked in front of the XE has done a classic “double-take” with their heads. So even when commuting, I never have to doubt that I’m driving a sexy car.
But, like the Volvo S60, there’s still enough utility in the XE to throw a lady’s fur coat in the back seat, squeeze a crate of wine in the trunk, and listen to the rain hit the roof on a long highway nighttime drive.

I’ve sat in the F-Type a few times, and operated its interior. It’s more than tight in there----it’s really about a “me” experience, and barely leaves anything for the Co-driver to enjoy. You feel surrounded by a lot of thick rubber seals and corners near the doors and side windows. It’s cool watching them do their subtle things, but they do eat up tiny millimeters of your occupancy space.
IF I drove one, it would have to be the convertible, just to retain a feeling of openness for both of us to enjoy while riding in it.
IF I drove one, it would be only be if I regularly drive coastlines and roads away from the city streets. The F-type is wasted on city driving----your “me time” will feel great only if you have ready access to the non-traffic light, non-congestion world.

IF I owned one, shopping centers, highway restaurants, and spots in front of evening clubs are the ONLY places I’d feel comfortable parking. Then, back to a safe garage at home.

I do like the F-Type, but I liked the XK era better, when the body and cabin stretched longer and had much more leather and chrome inside.

….Dealerships can’t see cars in this human way, so they won’t help much. The Jaguar website is useful for “building” your features/colors based on the final price (but not specific enough to help you understand what the trade-offs of each feature may be).
Use these forums to talk about “colors”, day-vs-night driving, gadgetry, and how your booty feels in the chairs. All these subjects are more important than we're told at the showrooms.

Thank you for such a thorough response, I can't really decide if the overall body of the XE is for me or not. I've looked at several sedans ctsv and hellcat most prevalent but they either lack sophistication entirely (hellcat) or seem a bit antiquated (ctsv) imo. A sedan of large enough to hold 3 car seats could certainly see more use but my wife is really pushing me to go F-Type. She siluggested a C7 initially because she knows how much I like corvettes but I also like exclusivity and it seems like 1:10 cars is a corvette around here. I'm still concerned though that buying a 2 seat coupe will result in an expensive garage ornament so I'll have to give it a harder look and sit behind the wheel of both. I'm not a big guy at 5'7" I likely won't feel too cramped in the cabin but till I experiene it myself I really won't know. Perhaps I'll go take my first test drive sometime this week!
