Default New Bloke In Boston, Lincolnshire

Good afternoon all, just thought I would say hi and give a quick intro. Just bought a rather nice S type 4.2 SE, this is Jaguar number 6 for me. Last one was an X308 XJR - great fun but very thirsty, prior to that was a 4.0 X300 Sovereign, before that a couple of XJ 40s andmy first Jag was a Series 2 4.2 XJ that had seen much better days.
The S-Type is booked in for a transmission oil change on Wednesday as I can see no evidence of it having been done before and the box is not what it should be, especially when cold, I also suspect the level is slightly low - it's doesn not like starting when facing up hill - it engages first a bit roughly.
Anyway - look forward to posting / being here, looks like a great resource for the Jg enthusiast.
Arthur.

Welcome to the forum Arthur,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

I can see you've already found your way to the S-Type tech forum so there's no need for a link to it from me.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

You can also visit the UK & Eire Region forum by following this link UK & Eire - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum
to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

Graham

Thanks all for the warm welcome, sad to say I may need help already, the old goat is playing up terribly at the moment - handbrake unable to apply, rough transmission, occasional rattle from the drivers side vvt on start up - very naughty Steven. Yes, the car is called Steven, the last part of the reg number is 5TVN, even though it is a she. The transmission is being done tomorrow, I intend to recalibrate the handbrake today and check the battery while I am at it. The vvt issue I will live with for now.
Best and all that,
1/2er.

I would have thought it best to get the timing noise sorted first. You could be looking at serious and very expensive damage to the engine.

It's only the vvt, it only does it when cold and only till the oil pressure comes up. It happens maybe 1 start in 5. It has been to a specialist, they say it is common and while annoying nothing to really worry about. Still not sure if it is the actual vvt or the solenoid that causes the problem, there is some evidence to suggest an engine flush often fixes it so may try that first. PS I have searched the web and not found one instance of a failing VVT trashing an engine.

Make sure its has an oil filter with a non return valve (OE Jaguar filters do) or it will be slow to build up oil pressure on starting.
