Hello, my name is Charlie, new member. Three years ago I bought a beautiful Phoenix red 2001 XKR coupe on Bring A Trailer for a reasonable $10,250. It had 124,000 miles, but a very comprehensive maintenance record with the exception of the timing guides not done. I factored the replacement into my bid, and for three years the car was perfect. Then last month I heard the timing chain rattle and knew my luck had run out. I live in State College, PA (home of Penn State) and the shop who works on my Mercedes 500SL & CLK 430 coupe said it was over his ability to fix. Trailered it 100 miles south

Take it to local cruise in.

Cheesy license plate, but the good ones were taken.
to Hummelstown, PA to an independent shop with a 32 year experienced Jaguar mechanic. They’re doing the guides and all four timing chains and I’ll have it back soon. Miss it, as it’s been my daily driver. Glad to be a member of your forum.

Welcome o the Forums.

Lucky, usually that noise is indicative of valves and pistons doing obscene things to each other.

Good luck.

Thank you. Happy to be here. I see you also had a CLK 430 too. Mine is a Magma red 1999 garage queen with only 11,100 miles. Need to drive it more, but it is an unusual car, very quick, timeless beauty, yet they don’t seem to hold their value. I almost bought another one last week that I saw on-line that went for a bargain price.

Thank you for all the tips for navigating the forum sites. I enjoy cars, show them, race them with SCCA, and usually have issues that are over my limited mechanical knowledge, so I’ll eventually have questions and need assistance.

I hope that by changing the plastic timing chain guides & all four timing chains that I won’t hear any valves and pistons clashing. Expensive repairs but I believe it will be worth it. Glad to be a member of the forum.
