Default New Member and about to be first time Jag Owner

Hello all. As the title says, I'm not only a new member to the forum but as of Saturday I should be a firsttime Jag Owner. I'm buying a 72 XJ6. Of course it needs some work, but all-in-all it's in fairly good shape considering some that I've seen during my pursuit. The body has a couple of minor dings and scratches and only a couple of very small surface rust spots and the paint (Old English White) has oxidized in only a couple of spots. The interior is actually in pretty good condition, especially the upholstery, except for the fact that the current owner had it re-done in an almost periwinkle crushed velour. It appears the original interior color was olive as that is what the console is. Wood, switches, etc. are all in fair to good shape. Mechanically it seems like it has the usual bad tanks from sitting so long and I think a motor mount or two might be busted. While new to Jags, I've become a fairly decent shadetree mechanic from some of my past projects so we'll see how it all goes. I just wanted to say hello and thanks. The forums have already been a tremendous help even before I have the car in my possession.

Welcome to the forum,

Always great to find individuals prepared to put the time and effort into keeping older models alive.

As well as guys in the XJ40 section who run them now, there's also some of us around old enough to have run them when new.

Welcome to the forum,

Good to have you with us.
Let us know how the work goes, it's always nice to see a project evolve.
Periwinkle crushed velour? I'm not sure I can even imagine that! :-)

You should add your car details to your signature to help others to help you.

Yeah, it's an odd blue-grey-purple. I'll start posting pictures of the process and you can get the full visual horror. Luckily the windows are tinted fairly dark. As soon as it's driving smoothly, that's the first on the list of things to be done. So I'll either be looking for interior to swap out (cushions are in great shape though) or just buy some new skins.

Thanks for the upgrade Jim. Yeah, this site has already been a tremedous help mechanically without even being in physical possession of the car yet. I believe the flexplate is loose and plan to check that out as well. I wouldn't have known about that being a possibility without this site. I have quite a bit of experience with Chevy drivetrains and have several spares sitting around, but I'm shooting for keeping the jag 4.2 in if possible. The engine herself seems to be strong and in good condition, it's just the rattle of what appears to be the flexplate, the movement of the engine under load (pointing at motor mounts), and the cutting out under load which is somewhere in the fuel/ignition systems. When I get it home, my first plan is to replace plugs and wires and fuel filters and check the quality of the gas coming out of the tanks. From what I've read on here, if the tanks are in as bad of condition as some I've read about, I'll be replacing those. Basically get it running smoothly and then it will be on to seats. I guess I'm picky or a snob or however you want to call it, but a Jag without leather is almost blasphemy. But thanks again and I look forward to learning and sharing as much as I can.

Welcome to the forum.

Before you change the seats, we must have a picture. They sound quite revolting.

Good to see you.

It's official. Just got home with her. I'll definitely post pics of the interior before I do anything to it. I'm also thinking I might start a thread detailing the whole process of start to finish (well, it will probably never be finished, lol) of her transformation. It turns out the ignition problem was the points. The guy who sold it to me fixed her without trying to raise the price. I feel very good about her and the sweet deal I got.
