Default New member introduction

Hello everyone.
My name is Michael and I'm new to this forum and new to the Jaguar community. I live in Portland Oregon and recently (two weeks ago) bought a 2000 S-Type with 50,000 miles for $5,000. I am the third owner. I bought from an acquaintance who has a side hustle flipping cars (translation, someone I trust who was honest about any issues). The good news is only 50,000 original miles. The bad news is it's sat unused for a LONG time (there's an oil change sticker in the corner of the windshield dated 2012!). The purchase was hasty due to the fact that my daily driver died and I needed a new set of wheels, thus I didn't do much research, and honestly, for the money I spent this car is in WAY better shape than most I looked at in the same price range, and to be honest... it's a freakin' Jag (when I took it for the initial test drive, it was definitely love at first drive). So, yeah, possibly impulsive, but I'm looking forward to cleaning this old cat up and returning it to its former dignity and style. So far there's only two issues I can identify: 1. when driving over bumps, there's a metallic "clunk" that sounds like possibly a loose motor mount, or bad bushing in a shock tower or control arm. 2. when idling at stop lights occasionally there's the smell of burning oil. There's a Jaguar mechanic here in town that I'm taking the car to for an inspection.
So, I am here on this forum to learn about this car and try to figure out how it differs from other vehicles and determine how much I can repair myself (I've always done most routine maintenance on my vehicles), and when it's necessary to have a qualified mechanic do the work.

@GGG (Graham). Thanks for the welcome, and big thanks for the links. There's a lot to digest on this forum... lots to wrap my mind around. Seems like Jaguar owners are a tight knit community. Cheers.

Hello, Michael,
Congratulations on your new S-type Jaguar!
You are so right! As the current used car market is very hot in Merca, and Anything that even runs a little bit is going for over $5000, you got a deal! Cuz, after all, It's a Jaaag!! Any Nay-sayers are merely Jealous of your new ride. 50,000 miles is only well broken in and loosened up. You should be able to look for at Least another 100,000 miles from that car.

However, as you mention, your car is now over 20 years old and has sat undriven for 10 years. You have probably discovered only a few of the reasons it was parked. In time you might find other things that need attention. Members of our S-type section will be only too happy to help you on your journey to make your new kitty puuuurrrr once again. Someone will be along shortly to direct you there if you haven't already found your way there.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.
