New member just bought S3 V12 Sovereign
Hello everybody,
New member here having finally got my first Jaguar. A life-long self-promised retirement present (future career), the car in question being a Series 3 Jaguar Sovereign V12 of 1988 vintage.
Will post more about the big cat when I take delivery, as to complicate matters we are also in the process of moving house. I am currently chasing down sources of manuals/handbooks for her.

Hello again forum members...big apologies for the time gap...renovating a house ready to move in takes way longer than ever planned for. We are now going to Plan B (or Plan W, X or what have you) said plan being that as winter is coming on we will move in within the next few weeks and work in-situ.
This of course has done nothing for my quality time with "Bagheera" the big cat. I wasn't able to pick her up until late afternoon on the 2nd of May when she was delivered to Derby on a trailer and I drove her home from there.
I'll post a lot more about the trip later, but in 47 years of motoring it was my first drive ever of a Jaguar, never mind of the queen of the big cats. She behaved impeccably as we oh so laboriously threaded our way through Derbyshire's obsessional deployment of speed cameras (seemingly with every little village enforcing its 30mph limit) and we made it through without falling foul of one of them.
Once we reached the motorway I let her have her head (within the national limit) and the next 60 miles were an absolute delight to the soul. So much power and oh so controllable and what a superb ride. She swept through the darkness like her namesake in the animal kingdom.
I stopped for coffee some 20 miles from home, parking her directly in front of the coffee place's front window so I could take in those superb lines while I drank my coffee. Newer stuff parked alongside her but in the half-light from the coffee shop the apex predator stood out as something special, low, feline-graceful but ready to pounce.
The last 20 miles were over far too quickly and Bagheera and I were almost home. We dropped off the motorway, sweeping the last tight corner of the slip without any effort whatsoever, then dropping down to docility again through Holywell and its speed limits. Once clear of Holywell one last blast on the de-restricted main road and the fun was over as we would then turn in for the final 200 yards to home.
I'll fill you all in on that last 200 yards in the next post.
Meantime here are Bagheera's basic details:
1988 Jaguar 5.3 litre V12 Sovereign, first registered April of that year.
Dove grey (I believe) in colour, with dark blue leather interior.
Approx 116,000 miles, good Pirelli boots and as I was to find out later, she's fitted with an AJ6 Engineering "Plus Torque" kit along with the optional "V12 Jaguar" engraved intake manifolds.
Regards
Peter

Peter,
Excellent post. Good to hear you got the car back home. Even in camera-blighted Britain, a long drive in a Jaguar is still something special.
I presume that in the intervening weeks you've had opportunity to check the car over and put a few more miles on in between the renovation work so the absence of any faults being mentioned sounds like good news.
Time to get the camera out and post some photos.

Morning Graham,
Thanks for the nice comment.
Yes, it was indeed a very special ride. Even though she is 25 years old that magic carpet was still very much there. As for drivability again a delight. I know some folks dislike the weighting of Jaguar power-steering but so far I find it fine. Power and torque from that 12 cylinder "turbine" comes in so smoothly and apparently endlessly, yet there's no feeling of touchiness in her response to the throttle.
Several little jobs to do and an electrical gremlin to chase down (more on that later) so how I wish I had indeed been able to find enough time to get to them all in the intervening months.
Better busy than idle as my old gran would have said.
Regards
Peter
P.S. Couple of photos posted in album "Bagheera" and in my garage.

Peter,
What was the MPG for the trip?
I've only had one V12 (a Series I XJ12) and it was an event to get into double figures. However, that was thirty five years ago and I drove a little more exuberantly in those days!

Hello Graham,
Can't actually tell you as I've decided that being in denial makes my Jaguar V12 indulgence feel rational!
In reality I haven't yet measured it. I'll let you know the real numbers once I've got them even if my current estimates are optimistic.
I fuelled each tank to showing about half full at the start, aiming to top up to the same level as much as possible when I refuelled again. Didn't want to go to full tanks until I had her home just in case there was any leakage problem as I didn't want my first ride spoilt if there were any such niggles and the resulting petrol fumes got into the cabin.
I estimated she'd do about 15mpg and considering the run was some 130 miles of about 40% town/village (mostly 30mph in fairly heavy evening traffic) and 60% motorway (at the legal limit) I reckon she may have done even slightly better (see, rationalisation is a great comfort) as I didn't find myself panicking to find unplanned petrol stops as the coffee stop mentioned previously was my first planned refuel point.
No, I didn't read it off the computer for two reasons: no idea how accurate it might be and also as yet no instructions on how to use it. Must chase down the missing paperwork.
Your series 1 V12: was it pre-HE? If so it explains the struggle to get into double figures.

Peter,
YES - the Series I was pre-HE.
With the very early V12's, the cooling system and Lucas Opus ignition were also far from reliable. These problems were history by the time yours was built.
Still the smoothest Jaguar engine even though under developed at that time.
