I just picked up a 2001 XJ8 with 179K miles, and it's my first Jaguar. Body and interior are super-clean, engine runs like crap. Before I get bombarded with comments about my sanity, I will tell you that buying and repairing basket cases and lost causes is my hobby. I NEVER "buy the best one you can afford" because I buy for the challenge. Some of my projects end up in the scrap yard but I enjoy trying to save them.

Pulling the DTCs showed several coils are faulty, so first step will be to replace those. The timing chains sound good (no rattle) but I will pull the covers and check the tensioners to be sure. The gearbox was recently replaced and seems to run smoothly but I will keep the drum problem in mind. Otherwise, all the electrical bits work (for now) and I think I'll really like the car once it is running correctly.

I've never owned, driven or ridden in a Jaguar, so this is like dating a new girlfriend- lots to learn and some of it may not be pleasant. Reading posts on this forum actually helped me decide to make the purchase as there is a ton of good information and lots of friendly advice available, which are both critical when owning a car like this.

No one here will question your sanity; we're all on the edge of psychosis ourselves.

Restoring basket cases can be Very satisfying, if one has the wherewithal and patience. Those qualities are also needed when wrenching on Jaguars of any age. You'll fit in here Just Fine!

Welcome.

ALL Jags are FEMALE, and you have that well in toe. They do have their moments.

Since yours has 4 cylinders missing, those tantrums will be less.

Without great forums like this one, I would never buy such a car. The true joy with this one will be getting to drive it once everything is working correctly (or close ti it).
