Default New old Jaguar owner

Hi there, new owner, old car: 2001 s type 3.0. Bought in the beginning of November 2021 at 114k kms, already 121k kms. Changed right tie rod end (was squeaking like crazy, boot was ripped). Back suspension rubber mostly ripped, silicone lube did fix the noises. Overall great condition with minor rust, which is not unusual in Atlantic part of Canada. Transmission shifts slow when car is cold started at like -5 C and run for 2-3 min (not warm enough yet); but does shift with small kicks when warm. Engine whines but probably a fan/serpentine belt thing, and when cold started after 30sec of idle car shakes for 15-20 sec and stops. Question is: how many kms should I expect from it before any major issues (transmission/engine/etc), if used as a daily driver? I warm up car for 2-3min typically, rarely floor it, plan to change fully synthetic oil and filter every 10k kms

Hello,
Congratulations on your new S-type Jaguar!
Your transmission problem we used to call Morning Sickness on the farm when I was a kid. It's caused by old age or getting overheated (probably age in your case as it's 20 years old), causing the soft parts to get hard and not seal oil anymore.

Eventually it will need a complete overhaul, but it will run for quite a while if you let it get good and warm before trying to move it. Otherwise, slippage wears out the clutches and, when that happens it will only move in L and R, which bypasses the clutch pack(s) and activates the band.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Welcome to the Forums.

Change the trans fluid, many times, until what drains is the same colour as what is going in, then a filter change, repeat in 70K kms.
Fresh fluids, engine, trans, steer and brake, will have the car outlast you.

The rest, good to go in my opinion.

Good luck.

Kinda scared to change the trans fluid, I do all service myself but went to the dealer for checkup, they said nothing has to be done with trans fluid as it’s enclosed system and doesn’t seem to have actual issues. Coolant wasn’t flushed but my tank had a crack right at the hose (engine fan was running for a few secs after the car was off once, so I figured it was a little too warm and fully checked the coolant). Changed the coolant tank, everything is great with that now. Steering is perfect condition, brake fluid too, but will change rotors. Few small things like external temp sensor slowly goes up while driving, I guess it’s touching something warm

The dealer is not giving you the full story.

YES - it is a sealed system BUT the fluid deteriorates in use. The magnet and filter in the pan always pickup a lot of particles. There's two divergent opinions on transmission fluid and filter changes:

1. around 70K is the optimum mileage for a change to increase the life of the unit
2. drain and refill can do more harm than good on an older vehicle if it is still on the original fluid

Worth reading about the topic in the many threads on the forum so you can make an informed decision.

Graham

From one S-type owner to another... Welcome. The S-type forum is populated with a very friendly group and contains a wealth of knowledge.

If you don't know the maintenance history of your S-type, changing the ATF is a prudent move. A 2001 MY car has the Ford 5-speed automatic, which is quite a bit less expensive to service than the ZF unit which followed in 2003.
