Default Newbie on the deck!

Hi all, looken for a bit of edvice for my 97 XJR. I have owned this car for the last 5 years and YES it is the nicest ride I have had up to now!

However, it has a condition. In hot weather after the engine totaly warms up (after about 30 -45 minutes) and the outside temp is above 75 - 80 deg. the engine will sputter and or die from a stop only (seems to have to do with the initial thrautal motion). I would have to wait for it to cool down and then continue to my destination.
It will do this in colder weather as sell but seems the what ever is getting effected by temerature, in the cold not as much.
Seems to run sell as long as it is going such as a freeway but the stop and go gets her acting up.

Much thanks in advance,

Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum! I am shocked that you didn't find this incredible forum sooner

Sorry, I can't help you with your particular 'issue' on that 97 (X308), but if you post your question in that particular subforum, you'll more than get some help.

Welcome to the forum Steve,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

Vapour lock in hot weather isn't something that troubles us too often in the UK! I'm sure members living in warmer locations will be able to help.

Follow this link XJ ( X308 ) XJ8 / XJR - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the X308 forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the US Western Region forum by following this link Western US - AK CA NV OR UT HI WA ID - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum

Enjoy the forums.

Steve,

Welcome to the forum! A few easy things you can check that can contribute to the kinds of stalling you describe are:

1. Have you had the car checked for any stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)? Many auto parts stores will check the codes for free (O'Reilly, AutoZone, Advance, NAPA, etc.). If any codes are stored, they may give you a clue to the area of malfunction.

2. Check the level and condition of the transmission fluid. Believe it or not, for our '93 this is the first thing Jaguar recommends be checked when a vehicle is stalling.

3. Check for slack in your throttle cable. It tends to stretch over time and this can cause the actual engine rpms to be different than the throttle position sensor indicates to the Engine Control Module and Transmission Control Module (I'm assuming your car has both an ECM and TCM). There is an adjustment for removing the slack from the cable - have the engine running while you do it so you don't tighten the cable so much that the idle rpm increases.

4. If the fuel pressure regulator (FPR) is not holding sufficient pressure in the fuel rail, the fuel can boil and vaporize, creating the classic "vapor lock" condition. On a 17-year-old car, it's a good idea to replace the FPR as a matter of course.

5. Some sensors can have heat-dependent issues, such as the Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) and Crank Position Sensor (CPS).

6. I don't know the electrical setup on the '97, but if there are separate relays for the fuel pump, O2 sensor heaters, etc., it is possible one of those relays has developed an intermittent, temperature-dependent malfunction.

I'm sure you will find a lot more help in the forum.

Cheers,

Don
