Default Newbie - my son bought an 84 XJ6

I'm 73 and have loved Jaguars since I was a kid and saw a clip of Clint Walker climbing out of a 2 seater
(https://www.google.com/search?q=clin...hrome&ie=UTF-8)
in the late 50's. As I grew older, the XJ series called to me with it's classic lines but I never thought I could afford to have one. Now my son bought a 1984 XJ6 and I'm besotted...
He's in Seattle, I live in Vermont, so I don't see it often enough. He has a very busy life and IMHO isn't spending the time and/or $$ to get it where it should be, so I've decided that I will try to use my time in Seattle seeing what I can do to give it some of the care it deserves. That's why I joined this forum - so I can learn from the expertise of others. I know nothing about cars, but I really love this car.
  • It starts, but runs really rough for the first few minutes - has to get up to 13V before it runs without stalling (I think this work for a mechanic as I suspect the car is in desperate need of a tune).
  • The sunroof leaks (I've read about the drain tubes - working on learning how to access rear tubes)
  • The radio is dead (Kenwood ... makes it a replacement, right?)
  • No power to the passenger door - windows/locks don't work (fuses?)
Paint looks good - couple rust spots on the hood next to the windshield and it needs buffing. (supposedly it was a "Florida car")
I'm sure a mechanic will LOVE to get this up on a lift... hope my checkbook can take the pain...

Hello,
They say, Rust on a Series Jag is like an iceberg: If it already shows, there's a Lot more that doesn't show. But you'll have a lot of fun with it while visiting your son, and I hope you find a *Competent* mechanic, familiar with Elderly Jags to help get it back in shape.

It sounds like you've already found your way to our Xj6 series section. I'll look for you there.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.
