Potential New Owner
Good evening all (No I'm not a copper
)
A bit about me, I'm 46 and currently employed as a service engineer in the security industry. Left the army around ten years ago and when bored can get myself into sticky situations.
I've always had a love of the Jag styling especially E type and the XJS but I really have a soft spot for the MKII and love the retro styling of the S type
I find myself in the lucky position of being able to afford my first Jaguar and find myself severely tempted by a low mileage S type
I was wondering if you good and kind fellows could give me heads up on any potential shortcomings of the car ie any recurring mechanical oe electrical issues
The model is a 3.0 V6 SE on a 04 plate.
thank you in advance Allan

Hi Allan, welcome to this great forum. I don't own an S-Type, but I can give you some general rules of thumb. First off, check for maintenance. Used Jaguars do not command as much used car market as their german counterparts so their prices tend to be lower. Due to their relatively low price they sometimes end up in the hands of owners who cannot afford proper maintenance and therefore shouldn't have owned a Jag in the first place. Therefore, full service history along with limited number of previous owners is a huge plus. I would check for previous body repairs. Carfax is good, but its not the "end be all". Spend few $$ and have the car professionally inspected. Dealer will charge an arm and a leg. I would take the car to a good independent mechanic - it will give you a piece of mind and some leg to negotiate price.
Beyond this, I recommend you going to the Model section of this forum and find one for the S-Types. These are excellent cars.

Welcome allan! Reading the historical threads in your s-type area should also give you a better idea of some frequent 'trouble. Spots...the dual climate control valve comes to mind first, and i dont even own an stype.
Welcome to the forum Allan,
Used Jaguar prices are on the floor in the UK so it's the right time to pick up a bargain. This also makes it a time when owners may be struggling with running costs so check the maintenance history on any potential purchase very closely.
Follow this link S-Type / S type R Supercharged V8 - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the S-Type section for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top there is a good place to start for info on regular issues.
