Red face Proud New Owner and Member....Leaking Hydraulic Fluid

Hello Everybody, pick up a 1988 XJ40-64000km this coming Friday. Never in my wildest dreams thought I'd be driving such an automobile with such character and history behind it. Trying really hard not letting this go to my head though, but its really difficult to sleep at night just waiting for this day to come.

This is my first forum and member group that I have been apart of. Apart from learning from a backyard mechanic, I cannot wait to seek the advice and knowledge from "MY" fellow Jaguar members. The threads and member responses that I have read, has shown me that the people here put themselves aside and lend a helping hand. In turn I hope to become a life long Jaguar owner and enthusiasts and be able to pass the torch.

The Jaguar that I could not walk away from was first owned by a gentleman that lived in Japan. He owned a house in West Vancouver and would come here for a couple of weeks at a time. In his short stay he would insure the vehicle drive it around a little and go back home. The second owner had it since 2009 and put about 8000 km a year on it and he had collectors plates.

He told me that he had the roof reupholstered and the back shocks had switched over from the hydraulic shocks. This vehicle was serviced regularly but after the last service the hydraulic brake system was leaking fluid. This was probably his breaking point since he did not do any maintenance himself. Everything else seemed immaculate. How could I walk away, he only was asking $2500. He did have it before for $5000 when I first inquired about it. But he could no longer keep it in the garage and he was even going to donate it, if it did not sell.

I looked underneath the vehicle and notice the fluid was leaking from the front of the vehicle in the middle of the car. When the vehicle arrives this weekend, I will be able to lift it up and take a closer look. Oh GOD please let it be just a hose. IF its not so simple a fix. Do you guys think that I should switch it over to a vacuum system.

Thanks for having a home for a Jaguar family.

Welcome.

Nice pick up.

The fluid leak is probably as you "hope", as the pump is on the timing cover front, and hoses run off from there.

However, as said already, be very specific with finding and fixing that leak, throwing stuff at at it only compounds the fault.
