Default Traded a DeLorean for an XJR; crazy? nope..

I traded my 81 DeLorean for a 98 XJR+cash this last weekend, and I'm thrilled I did it

The DeLorean was a poster car of mine as a child and my expectations were somewhat shattered when I purchased one and discovered wobbly handling, extreme underpower, and shaky reliability. Worst of all, any drive out prompted random people to ask if it had a Flux Capacitor.. tired and lame. I'm a car enthusiast and our first principal is to experience as many cars in our lifetime as possible. I had the DeLorean for two years and it was time to move on.

I was contacted by an XJR owner in Oregon interested in offering me his car plus the difference in value in cash. I didn't know much about the XJR at the time, but my father thought he might want to buy it directly from me after the trade. I agreed to meet but expected to bring the DeLorean home.

I now know why you all love your Jag's so much. Initially, I compared the XJR's offerings to my 05 Infiniti G35 - it came with all the tech my Infiniti has (plus more) in a car eight years older, nice. Except it truly was better: faster, quieter, softer, more gentile. Everywhere you place your hand you find texture's appealing to the touch; velvet, finished wood, leather. Good bye boy-ricer hello Jag! (I apologize to owner's of Infiniti's for my "boy-ricer" comment!)

I loved the car so much I decided not to sell it to dad but keep it as a daily driver myself.

Sure I'll miss trying to go back in time with the DeLorean, if only it could hit 88mph as quickly as the XJR.

Hey Stig.....great write up / intro to the forum which I hope you enjoy as much as you seem to enjoy the XJR......beautiful ride.....no doubt you'll be posting pics at some point so we can see?
The DeLorean is a classic but as you say has many many flaws but I'm sure it was a blast to own one for a while at least.
Welcome to our world - enjoy your stay

Welcome, the DeLorean was a neat concept and a very cool car, but highly under-engineered and 'm sure you'll be very happy with your XJR.. Hopefully you keep it and get some pictures posted up as soon as you get a chance.. Throw some of the DeLorean up in the other rides section too, I'm sure everyone would like to see it.. Eric

Actually, the after-life of the car is incredible.

Every original factory part is now available again thanks to the efforts of what is now the DeLorean Motor Company (private owners who ended up purchasing the name and some of the original factory equipment). They've also reengineered some of the originally error prone components and fabricated performance upgrades like twin-turbos.

They even offer completely new DeLorean's built to specification by hand with all new materials for about $80,000. Model year 2009 production is supposed to be about 100 cars.

If I had a Delorean, I'd have to find some way to keep it while still getting the jaguar. I'm aware of the fact that a delorean is a poor car in reality, but I've always wanted one (i blame television). Besides, since when did practicality ever stop a car enthusiast? Funny you mentioned the G35, I considered the coupe before buying the s-type instead.

And where can we find information about these little beauties? A revival of the car would be hugely interesting.. at least to some. Can you imagine, fixing all of the poorer quality parts, updating the interior, but keeping the stainless steel skin and the Marty McFly 'image'?

You couldnt go wrong getting rid of the DMC, this kid i knew from college had one said it was absolute junk besides looking cool. At least you didnt have to worry about swirl marks

XJR is a great car tho, also remember it cost the price of 2-G35s new.

If DMC wants the new one to be better i say forget the twin turbos and drop a chevy big block in it with straight pipes

You can check out the order sheet for the new DeLorean here. Looks like the base price is actually $57,500 with a fully optioned car coming to about $80,000.

As far as keeping the DeLorean, it just wasn't worth it. It's a car that most of its value comes from appeal and rarity, not from good build materials or performance. It's a car fun to been seen in, but not fun to drive - which is more important to someone who loves cars?

I 2nd the idea of a DeLorean with a chevy haha now talk about fun.. You'd hit 88mph in well under 6.5 seconds.. I just don't know how you would hook the flux capacitor up to the chevy accessory drive.. Jegs probably sells a bracket..?

Pics of DMC 12 please!!! I've always wanted one, but I know the performance/reliability issues are lame.

Sorry for the delay in this thread, I've been jumping straight into the Jag topics of course

Here are some pics of the DeLorean I took for its craigslist ad.

Do I miss it yet? No actually. I'll cherish the memories, but I'm already getting more life out of the XKR (not to mention comfort and reliability)
