Default Widest Rear Tires for 18"x 8" Asteroids?

Can anyone let me know what the widest rear tires I can install on my 2000 XJR with Asteroid wheels 18" x 8"? The rears seem too narrow and I am looking for more of an aggressive look without having to buy new wheels.

currently have 255/40R18s all the way around. Would 265/40s or 275/40s work on an 8" wide wheel? Or, would 255/45s give it a wider appearance even though it would only be taller?

Any help is much appreciated.
