XJ decisions
Hello,
I've wanted an XJ6 since the early eighties but couldn't afford one, so I bought a TR6 instead.
I still have it and learned to be a mechanic on that car. I've rebuilt almost every system on it over the years. TTwo years ago I helped one of my sons Build an old '74 Honda. Last year I bought a 20 year old BMW and got it all working properly and plan to sell/donate it to my youngest son. My wife wants a car to use around town and I think I may have talked her into letting me Buy and old XJ6 (70's - 80's) vintage. I've found a few around for under $5000 that appear to be in decent shape. Even though I've always wanted one of these I've never really researched them to know much about them and things to consider when purchasing, (especially a vintage one). I plan on going to look at an 1984 XJ6 this week. Any suggestions on things to look out for. I'm realistic in that for $3k and being 30+ years old I will probably bring home a project but that's part of the fun. However given the nature of old cars an Jag's reputation I would like to steer away from major issues if possible.

Go to the "XJ6 Xj12 Series I-II-III" section. In one of the sticky threads at the top you'll find a buyers guide that might be useful.
An '84 XJ6 would be a Series III. Great cars, the most modern of all antique automobiles. Good choice. But, yes, unless you get very lucky and pay a very high price, any Series III you buy is bound to need *at least some* remedial work.
Interestingly, about 14 years ago I was shopping for a TR6 and ended up with another Jag instead....because the TR6s were just too expensive !
