Default High Cars for Old People

My parents need a vehicle. They're getting old so the LWB X300 is a bit low (and long... and wide). It needs to be X300 cheap.

I suggested an older Jag (such as 420), but I think they're after something higher still. Also, a 420 might be built like a tank, but modern safety features such as airbags would be nice.

They've been looking at RAV4s, but Christ, it'd be nice if my parents could retain a bit of dignity, you know what I mean?

One problem with Jag ownership is nearly any other car feels like a step down and nearly any other car offering as much as a Jag does is much more expensive.

I dunno. How about a few-years-old Volvo? They're not a frumpy as they used to be but I think they're taller than an X300. I rented an S70 for a week (a few years ago) and it was a perfectly satisfactory car. Totally uninspiring, but perfectly satisfactory. A nice one shouldn't be too expensive, I'd think.

Do you get any/many American cars down there? You know, modern Yank iron isn't anything like the wallowing land yachts of old and many are nicely appointed.

Cheers

Most old people and all fat people in the USA now drive SUVs.

They like the 'walk-in, walk-out' ingress & egress.

I hope Jaguar never makes an SUV but

I expect to have my hopes dashed.

LOL Marsden.

I always think it a shame that Jaguar did not develop a performance Off Road vehicle.

1000's of young mothers would have bought them to take the kids to school!

As for the old post by Oubadah, an SE or HSE Classic RangeRover would fit the bill.

Can we get some specifics here on what qualifies as 'getting old'?

I've hidden my XK8 keys until I'm sure no one is coming round to force me into one of those motorised supermarket trolleys a.k.a. an SUV.

Is Jaguar the largest marque not to have an SUV-type offering? The Cayenne has been Porsche's best-selling model since it was introduced (over the dead bodies of thousands of Porschephiles)..

Speaking of keys and getting old.

The experts say you're not senile just because you lose your keys all the time.

You're senile when you can't remember what keys are for Name: icon_smile_tongue.gif

Find them a 1950 Mercury. Plenty of room!

Jaguars' owner TATA does make an SUV comparable to the Jaguar in quality and price: LAND ROVER! Own Jags, Owned Land Rovers. Liked the old Range Rover Classic best, handled the best and less electrical glitches, still had leather, climate control, all electric windows and locks and seats and 4X4. But that might be a little pricey. Jag X-type AWD wagon will be the closest Jag SUV type. Nice ride and winter confidence, low enough for us old people to get in and out of.

I agree with "Jagfixer" on LAND ROVER being an SUV that is related to Jag. They have been closely tied for years, even before Ford owned them.

Back in 2010, I was planning on purchasing a used Rover for my daughter, We took an 06 Freelander and a 04 Discovery on test drives and was very disappointed! The interior was appointed with cheap plastic that appeared like it was going to fall apart if touched too hard. I also hated the handling on the freeway and decided on a 2007 Liberty instead. It least the Liberty is easier to upkeep!

Well, it might be thought of as a "younger person's car" but the Matrix has a very upright seating position.

My 70 year old mother owned Accords and Camrys in the past, but she found the Matrix to have a perfect seating position. You step out of a Matrix, not up, not down.

Now that I am the owner of her Matrix, its a contrast to the S Type, where I have to climb out.

I have to step-up into my Durango, my wife has bad knees so she has problems getting in and out.

On my VDP:
I have my seat/pedals/steering wheel programmed to the following:
When I press button 1
Pedals retract
Steering wheel retracts and tilts up
Seat raises to full hight and backrest moves slightly forward
(all at the same time)
This allows me to enter/exit a lot easier at my age.
When I press button 2
Pedals extend to set position
Steering wheel extends and lowers to set position
Seat lowers and backrest moves slightly to the rear
(all at the same time)
Button 3 is my setting for long distant driving.

FWIW, I'm finding in car after car now that I can't get the steering wheel close enough to achieve a comfortable driving position. I know why this is--I'm 6'-3" and to have the seat back far enough means I can hardly reach the wheel--because of lawsuits from short people who were too close to the steering wheel when struck by airbags, mfrs no longer permit steering wheels to travel very far toward you.

Jaguar had an SUV in development, it is now being sold as the Range Rover Evoque. The Land Rovers of 2005 and up are top notch with interiors on the Range Rovers getting into Bentley territory. The Discovery and Freelander were really bad. Also remember what is considered a "SUV" today is not a true SUV. Not many so called "SUV's" of today can do what Rovers can do.

I recommend a Acura MDX for your parents. Excellent quality, dependable and last a good long while with minimal repair cost.

Please note also the Range Rover "Classic" in the NA market only came as the County and County LWB trims. The P38a Range Rover (1995-2002) came in HSE and SE trims with a 4.0/4.6 Rover V8.

The aluminum XJ is taller (2004-and newer). I've seen them as low as $10K CAD.
