Default 01 s type 4.0 no start until

Hi guys new to the forum lots of help here. I bought this car from a friend who said he doesn't know whats wrong with this car. The car sat for 8 months. I got it home charged the battery and tried starting it. I have fuel pressure, starter engages don't know about spark issue. So read some posts and cleaned throttle body. Still no start, disconnected the intake tube from the throttle body and after a bit she started and ran rough. So then I connected the tube and can't start it. I think is weird she will start without the tube connected, run rough but started. Any help would be great. I know my way around a lot of cars this is my first Jag. Thanks for looking.

Could it be I didn't clean the throttle body good enough?

How much fuel pressure? At least 40 - 42 psi?

Anything less is an issue. More times - when the car sits the fuel pump seizes up or gets clogged. On that point - has the fuel filter been changed?

It shouldn't need cleaning. It's not (imagined or real) dirt that's causing problems.

Oil level was 1 quart low and oil is clean. I'm very worried about this noise. Noise is coming from driver side of motor up top around valve cover. Is it good news that theres no smoke,no codes no leaks ect? Really don't know where to go with this first. I'm not a Jag guy this is my first

I've been researching a lot on this forum. I'm hoping the problem is the timing chain adjuster. What do you guys think any help would be great. I know I'm a new member but really need some help.

I'd suggest trying fresh oil and a new filter and go from there, even though it looks ok. If you can warm up the engine fully without it sounding like the engine will explode, that would be even better before draining it.

Ok I will try this and let you know what happens. You think this could be the cause of this loud knocking noise? I should add the car sat for 8 months without running

Charged battery may be bad. Fuel filter may be blocked. Fuel pump may be failing. You can monitor fuel psi instant by instant using OBD.
Only way to check tensioners is to take apart and look. You want the metal bodied ones.

I wouldn't run it again until the tensioners are checked.

Check the tensioners and if they have not been replaced then replace both and it is good advice for you not to run the engine until you have them checked. If it is a loud tapping I would venture to say the tensioners but if it is a knock you may have a deeper problem like a rod or wrist pin problem.

I'm going to check the tensioners tomorrow is there anything I should watch out for when pulling everything off? And how long should it take to get everything off to look? Thanks

Advice to check TC tensioners (and quick smart) is very timely. Also be aware that there have been reports of "chain jumping" which upsets timing, makes for start and/or rough running issues, and in very worst but rare cases, valve clashing. Any of these could give rise to RPM dependent tapping noises.

Do not start again unless all of this, including timing, has been checked and corrected if necessary. Biggish DIY job ... special tools if you need to reset timing ... read up on relevant section in workshop manual.
