'01 s-type fuel gauge slow to respond
Hello all,
Searched forums for hours and didn't find any threads to help me, so posting it. 2001 S-type v-8, 79k. Noticed when filling the fuel tank, usually around 1/4 at refill, she takes almost 20 minutes to register a full tank. She doesn't fluctuate, ie drop to empty, nor does the gauge fluctuate with "spirited" driving. Once she registers the tank level, she tracks it just fine.Thinking it was sulphur on the sender, I've ran 2 tanks with Chevron additive, and she still does it. Leaning toward sender unit here, but wonder might I have a bad "slosh" board? Or Cluster? Looking for input, thanks in advance.

I'm thinking the sensor, too. The cluster isn't likely at all. You should be able to read the fuel level with any OBD tool that does "live data" (such as elm327, about $12). If the tool sees slowly increasing values then the cluster is OK. You want it to be, as they're very costly and not DIY to change due to needing dealer programming to the rest of the car.
I don't think they allow any sulphur worth talking about in fuel any more (kills the cats).

I noticed the same thing on our 2003. Filled it up one evening and it didn't quite move all the way to full. It was fine the next morning. I just assumed it was one of those little Jag quirks we love so well.
I've had this happen a couple of times over the past few months. I turn the ignition switch off, remove the key, wait a few seconds, re-insert the key, crank it up, and all is well. I just shake my head and wonder what's next....
Crazy, if so. (Though here you'd risk having your car stolen if you left the keys in!)

Thanks for the tips. Yea do shut off the car filling, and as for obd info on my Mac mentor scan tool, it's limited, and mostly pertains to about 20 lines of engine data. Topped her off this past sat, was around 1/2 tank, and she registered it right after startup. Quircky indeed. Now if my radio would stop displaying gibberish...lol. Thinking I'll live with it.
