Yes, slightly shorter bolts are in order and the slack should be taken up once oil pressure builds in the tensioner.

We are thinking maybe the secondary chains should be replaced too.. Thoughts?

Thanks but I don't think that is the reason, most engine shells have those. The AJ133 5.0 doesn't actually but should still not be rotated backwards. Personally I believe it is because the timing chain may skip if turned backwards because the tensioners go slack.
