Default 2001 s-type check engine light

My reader tells me two codes P1383 (Variable Cam Timing Overretarded (Bank #1) ) and P1388 (Variable Cam Timing Overretarded (Bank #2)) (the p1288 has a * and the reader says there is only one code.) anyway the car always had a little bit of a misfire and a tick so im thinking this is the tensioners but looking for some opinions before i break into that project.

P.s. Am I imagining things or with this error code does gas mileage get greatly effected from this because it feel like my car is in "safe mode" and the misfire shake kinda goes away.

I get the vibe that you've dealt with this quite a bit here, but i just cant seem to find where and when. the closest thing i could find is someone with a v6 that you replied to but i still haven't seen much info. Can you link me to the post you have in mind please?

Depends. Previous posts provide info

If need be, use Advanced Search on those codes AND only the S-Type forum.

(You could read my write-up on better searching, too LOL)

Hi, I had the same problem with my 2000 Jaguar S Type with 4.0 V8 - first, you should be using either 5W20 or 0W20 - preferably synthetic oil. Buy engine flush or equivelant, run the engine for 15 - 20 mins at idle. Then with a new oil filter use 5W20 and subsistute 1 quart with automatic transmission fluid - it is highly detergent. It might take a while but it cleans the usually clogged VVT assemblies. Hope this helps and good luck.

So do you keep this up for every oil change. Or continue with regular oil changes with the synthetic at regular intervals?

What faults do you have? Don't do it at all without any!
