There's no "it". You're looking for one or more causes, in your specific car. There are threads which step by step go through the most likely through to some unlikely ones. How to go about ruling some in and others out needs a calm, logical, methodical approach - starting with reading and studying the threads. Or don't DIY.

Any reading shows "tune ups" will do nothing for a drain.

OK this is my first post so here goes. My sister in law bought a 01 S-type with a battery draw problem. I found a factory(?) Schmacher charger behind the passenger side headlamp that was killing the battery. Also replaced the damaged battery; the 00 and 01 had a factory wiring defect that requires a wire from the pass footwell fuse panel to the CAN buss supervisory computer that allows the system to sleep @ 44 minutes. One year later the sunroof motor controler developed a continious draw and I just removed the fuse. Seems to be working now (Sept 2013). You need to verify that the battery hasn't been damaged AND current meter connected to the negative battery terminal to monitor the resting current draw over a period of an hour. Also once power is restored, the radio turns on the amplifier so you have to cycle power to the radio. Resting current should be 30-35 ma. BE VERY CAREFUL WORKING WITH BATTERYS. Jeff

There's no CAN bus until 2003 S-Types.

Yes there is a CAN buss. The Jaguar Technical guide dated Feb. 99 talks alot about it. The S-Type technical bullentin S414-02 has information about the "High quiescent Drain" for the model year 2000. S414-01 has information on the current drain as it tapers off to 0.030 amps at 40-45 minutes. The electrical guide Jaguar S-Type issued Nov 2000 covers it very well. FWIW

Well, I have all those so where is CAN? Which section / page numbers in the S-Type Tech Guide and figure in the S-Type elec guide? I see no CAN in the S-Type then.

I think you mean SCP - which isn't CAN.

Wow, you want to argue the SCP is not CAN? All of the modules Communicate on a high and a low network. Sounds like controller area network to wikipedia. The OP probably doesn't care what we call it, he just needs some advice on where to look for a solution for his problem. I mentioned four that I found, do you know of any others?

Of course I want to argue SCP isn't CAN. Different voltages, different speeds, different data, needs different software as well as hardware to talk to it! If you have a fault on SCP you need to diagnose it very differently than for CAN. They connect to different pins on the OBD connector, too.

SCP is basically a Ford thing but CAN is on all new vehicles - by law.

As I posted, no CAN on the early S-Types.
Later ones have some of both, with even more CAN as time goes by.
