Default 2003 S-type 4.2L crankshaft pulley removal

Question: has anyone else had trouble removing the crankshaft pulley to get to the timing cover? I got the crankshaft pulley bolt out already. I know there is special tool (puller) for this but can’t a regular metric puller work just as well. Is there a washer in the crankshaft bolt hole that is binding the pulley when the puller is engaged? Is is necessary to use the Jaguar approved puller to remove the pulley? I attached am look inside the crankshaft pulley bolt hole.

Thanks... is the XK crank damper different from S type? I don’t see the cylindrical split cone on the S type

You’re right! Of course. Thank you... got it off finally by using universal puller and hitting with heavy hammer every couple of turns. Do I need to now replace the collet after removing or reuse ? Last question? Thanks for your patience!

I re-use the collet. Jaguar make no mention of one-time-use collets.

(as per the TSB)
Note: Always replace the timing case oil seal, the damper O-ring, and the
damper retaining bolt with new items any time the damper is removed.

The bolt can be reused if the threads are OK and you use a locking compound but Jaguar advises a new bolt.(use your own judgement)
I have removed bolts that had damaged threads so I used a thread chaser in the crank and a new bolt.

Default Thanks for the sage advice

I bought a new bolt because old one had thread damage. That bolt behind the steering pump mounting bracket is a bear ... guess I should take off steering pump and mounting bracket? Will timing cover come off if the T40 bolt is removed from steering pump mounting bracket. Will be using lots of loctite eventually

Default In other words

Do any of the 5 bolts (one is a T40 bolt) that thread from the steering pump mounting bracket into the timing cover to bind it in place? Thanks!

Default In addition

I will be reusing the split collar collet because it was in great shape. A universal puller did fine in place of the Jaguar special puller tool.

A few years ago, you talked about a correct puller. I bought one and taking this pulley off was easy. This is the kit I got to do this job. Thanks way too late for your tip.

Default Does anyone know if timing cover in held in place by steering pump bolts

Do any of the 5 bolts (one is a T40 bolt) that thread from the steering pump mounting bracket into the timing cover to bind it in place? Thanks!

I’ve got the 24 timing cover bolts out and it still seems bound

On the 2000 4.0, the AC and Alternator had to be unbolted and moved back. Check and see if there is a lip on the AC housing or Alternator. I don't have a book on the 4.2.
