Default 2003 S-Type - Rear Indicator Issue Resolved

Hi guys,

I've got a stinker of a problem with my S-type,
The rear right indicator is flashing dim and causing the reverse lights on both sides to also flash.
I've been fiddling with it for weeks now and starting to get to me. i have a fair bit of knowledge when it comes to cars so I've already checked numerous possibilities with no positive outcome.

Things I've checked;

fuses have been checked, and replaced with new ones (just in case)

i have replaced the rear cluster several times (have access to multiple cars)

checked/replaced all bulbs (just in case)

Checked/ replaced relays

tried the new earth as highlighted of XK8's (still no joy)

any help would greatly be appreciated.

Sounds like it's wiring, connector or module. "Fun" with a meter to diagnose...

Maybe caused by damp at some point, or chafing, or well who knows till you find it.

I'm not sure you can swap the module (REM aka RECM, I expect - see Electrical Guide), some say you can and some not.

If a power issue it would most likely be the + as the module switches to ground.

I've had the RECM out to check the wires, i might switch it about with another one tomorrow to see what difference it makes.
I do have some wires that have snapped through chaffing, but they're at the usual place along the hinge of the boot, i know what they feed to and don't play any significant role in the indicator issue.

I also have a few connectors on both sides of the boot which aren't connected to anything, it doesn't look like they should connect to anything, and when comparing to other cars, they have the same wires that lead to nowhere, can only assume these are for CD changer etc?

Yes, ignore the unconnected ones. Any chafed/broken might upset a module or relay somewhere so are suspects.

Swapped out the RECM today and still no joy, will tackle the frayed wires in the boot harness. They've previously been repaired, chances are they may have come apart underneath the duct tape.

That old duct tape may be your problem. Remove all of it, check the wiring connections, and re-wrap the involved wires using the proper electrical tape....

That's exactly what it was....

A wire (the brown and white one controlling indicators and reverse lights) had came apart inside the duct tape. Cleaned all the wires, connected them properly, hey presto everything works.
Thanks for your input guys.
