2005 S Type 4.2 Transmission
As I delve deeper into owing a Jaguar, I'm finding a lot of answers but not all of them. Having recently read what I should do to my ZF6HP26 transmission at 100k miles to keep it healthy...right now it works great...and found the necessary parts, I can't determine if it is a Gen 1 or Gen 2. Apparently one of them has an 053 separator plate and the other does not. I'd like to have the correct parts on hand before I drop the trans pan. Google was very helpful in showing me how to determine which one I have after I get it apart. Does anyone know which trans would be in my 2005 S Type 4.2l NA?
EDIT: I think I was wrong about the Gen 1 or Gen 2. It seems that the Gen 1 can come either with or without the separator plate.

You can but be sure and replace the sealing sleeve. It's a WAY more common problem compared to the separator plate. Which if it's bad you will know it by how the transmission shifts!
If everything works fine now I would do the standard service. Replace the pan/filter, upgrade the pan bolts, replace the sealing sleeve when the pan is off. Then fill the transmission correctly (Which is a bit of a job!). I used Lifeguard6 but again we know MerconSP is exactly the same fluid and MUCH cheaper. But it's up to you which fluid to use. I am NOT a fan of flushes but some people do it.

What I read in the sticky post seemed to indicate that parts in the valve body would get weak over time and contribute to accelerated wear in the rest of the trans. It was recommended to replace the solenoids, install a Sonnax Zip Kit, and replace the part you referenced. There's rebuilt valve bodies available on eBay but I question their quality.
It would not hurt to replace all that. But like most repairs if your car is not having a problem I would NOT go looking for one!
I have run and seen many ZF 6 speeds with well over 100K miles running all factory parts. The real importance is maintenance which means fluid changes and filter replacements. As you know when these first came out it was loudly trumpeted that it was "Filled For Life". That was a HUGE mistake on the part of the car manufacturer's (All of them!).
With regular fluid changes I don't think you will have any problems for as long as you own the car.
Have you checked the sealing sleeve? This is just about guaranteed to be leaking. ZF changed the O-rings and the replacement sleeves seem solid with no leaks.

I haven't checked the sealing sleeve. You're not the first person to mention that so it'll be high on my list of priorities. I'm depending on this car for another week or two till the Honda comes back home. Then I can really tear into it.
transgo kit not the sonnax. you might want to do the lube regulator kit as well
valve body is marked with the plate you need

The bridge seal and valvebody seal are a good idea to change , lifeguard fluid tcm sleeve . The filter is built into the pan. The only reason you would need to know what gen trans you have is if you are rebuilding the valvebody . In that case you can get the code off a tab on the separator plate mine was #036 which made it a gen 1 zf6hp26 . I bought a rebuild kit from sonnax called a zip kit and replaced the separator plate . The transmission is operating like new again. The fluid fill is a little complicated but you can find video on YouTube on how to do it. Good luck.

I’ve spent just shy of £1800 on a gear box rebuild ..picked car up .. ran fine & I thought great !!
but no … days later same faults , “gear box fault “” jerky shifting from 2nd to 3rd etc ( £1800 spent remember)
im at the point of scrapping the thing as enough is enough with this car . The car is going back to the transmission specialist that did the rebuild tomorrow and leaving it there .which obviously means no transport etc for perhaps another week or so etc ..
Last chance saloon for the S type unfortunately
