Default About to buy my first Jag!

I thought it was time I bought a jag, my dad had a few, my granddad had a few, now it is my turn!

I'm looking at buying a S-Type 2005 4.2 Sovereign this week. It's done 55,000 kms looking to get it for around $29,000 US from New Zealand.

Anything I should be extra cautious with when checking out the car?

Also I want to buy a leaping jaguar emblem for the front of the car, any reccomendations where to purchase them from. Or how much I should look at spending to get one?

Looking forward to driving it!

Welcome to the forum!

They're lovely cars, and you'll love the 4.2 engine.

Do you DIY? I'm guessing there will be few dealers in NZ and they may be expensive

No idea on price except that would be way too much here or the USA.

mrgreen, she sounds like a beaut...but $29k is way too much for an 05, even with 40k on the clock. I can buy a low mileage $100k 05 XKR for $21k. Negotiate them down below $20k. You may have to educate tham on retail values for some Jag years.

N.Z and Aussie prices are quite different from either the US or UK. They tend to be higher.

Don't know about NZ but someone posted recently on Aussie prices for cars and spares and said there was a huge difference from Europe / US costs.

Thats probably about average price over there..I went to NZ a few years ago for a vacation and the whole trip cost a little over $20,000. I couldn't believe how fast things added up there, then a ton of credit card transaction fees to boot.

That price does make me a little sick though. I paid 28 for my '07 R that had 12k miles on it and I thought that was bad hehe.

Yeah whenever I look at pricings for cars overseas I'm shocked at how cheap they are.

Like Norri said these prices are typical Used Jaguar S Type for Sale - Autotrader New Zealand.

Maybe it makes sense for me to buy one from overseas and get it shipped?

Thanks Regentv12 for the parts links.

that would be around what $35000 aud that's a good price for this part of the world - and below average ks - but unless you are clue y mechanically and electrically these cars can be expensive to maintain and you really should stay away from general mechanics who don't know these cars which does rather limit your options.

they are a beautiful and rewarding car to drive even at the entry level end.

being a member of a forum like this one is a must as you will get a lot of help here.

if i had seen a 2005 4.2 with 55000 odo in good condition in West Australia for $37000 i would have snapped it up.

well i would definitely buy it but get it checked by those Jaguar contacts first.

i guess the drawback of an overseas buy is you don't get to inspect it before purchase - but maybe one of the other more cluey fellas on the forum might be able to assist you in that regard.

dont forget to check with customs and your road traffic people as there might be extra costs above just the shipping and also compliance issues which might eat up the benefit of buying overseas.

then there is the wait - and dont use a container ship with the name Titanic.

No, $15000 (USD) is about the same in AUD. Isn't it?

USD is now about the same as AUD I think.

But there will as has been said be customs etc fees, I expect.

i meant the op's price for the 2005 4.2 sorry . yes the us and aud are about parity and $15000 is a lot cheaper than here - i saw a 2002 S-type R in WA and they wanted $49000 aud for it with 92000 ks.

thats why i am driving a 2003 2.5 which they usually wanted $33000 for at the time but i paid $26000 for it and counted myself lucky.

then it needed the transmission rebuilding (under warranty) which would have cost me $4500 so it must suck to be a car dealer
