AC and Water Pump questions
Hello All,
Once again I come humbly to the forum for advice. I have a 2004 S Type 3.0L base model with 80k. I am currently finishing up some lengthy service and repair work due to the lack of history on the vehicle. Replacing the DCCV due to the many issues I have read about along with new idler pulleys and belt. Since I am at this point, would replacing the water pump be a good preventive maintenance? I ask since I did not see it as a problem per say, but due to my mileage and the fact that I have the fan assy off the front of the motor , it would be much easier to do now. The AC was beginning to not cool at low rpm and I read the TSB on this and figured that may be the issue. However, as I looked under the Jag the compressor is showing the green oil leak which lends me to suspect a seal is going. The pressure was also too high and I suspect the PO tried to add more freon to make it cool. I will be replacing the AC compressor and will follow the excellent threads on this topic. I do ask if I should flush the system? There was no compressor failure and I will be changing the dryer element. I very much appreciate the help from the wonderful forum members.
Thank you,
Mike K

I've been through the EXACT same issue. Go ahead and replace the compressor which will require a new drier unit and associated O-rings. Also, I would not recommend changing the water pump unless it leaks or has bearing slop. I did this exact job this past spring and also removed the radiator and condenser, washing both and refreshed the coolant.
I would recommend replacing any of the hoses that have the plastic couplings, too.

The A/C compressor instructions usually tell you to flush the system or no warranty but that is really only for systems that had a complete catastrophic failure. Sometimes called "Black Death".
With our cars (and in general any car with dual climate control) you have a split evaporator. What this means is you really can't do a flush because if one side of the evaporator is blocked there is always another path for the flush material to follow.
You might have a shaft seal failure but the two compressors I replaced both had the center seal of the compressor body leaking. Does not really matter as both leaks mean you need to replace the compressor.
There was a change in the dryer too. My 2005 has the bag installed in a tube on the passenger side of the condenser. But earlier cars had the much more common Aluminum container that is just replaced entirely.
Make sure you know what kind your car has. This is one area where the JTIS is not a help because Jaguar changed to the bag inside a tube version after the JTIS was released.
