99 s-type 3litre auto. I cannot select 2nd gear manually on the override section. When in D in seems to use 2nd when it goes up though the box. I can select 4th and 3rd manually no problem. But there is mechanical resistance when i try to push the lever forward to 2nd. Thanks

 

Checked the shifter cable?

 

+1. On shifter cable - is this a duplicate post?

 

If you adjust the shifter cable and are still having problems remember that the cable can stretch too. If that happens you can adjust all day long and still won't get it adjusted properly.

Then you need to replace the cable and a number of people have.
