Question Buying my first Jag

Well I finally got rid of my cadillac and decided on a S-Type. Ive always loved how these cars looked. Im looking at a 2001 S-Type 4.0 V8.
Any thing I should look for before I purchase ? It has 100k on it but has been babied, never smoked in and always garaged. Looks like its brand new.

Hi,

I don't mean to sound rude or unhelpful, but there is literally at least 2 people who ask this very question every month. Just use the search button you will get pages and pages of responses from all of us.

Search 'first jaguar' or something.

after rebuilding 2 and servicing a couple others, I would hold out for an 03+ with the 4.2l engine, much less problems!

mrvspitbulls - Use the Search feature! Why stupidly mention 10,000 threads?

This car has high mileage and I have the 2000 model. Unless you plan on not using it much I'd stay away from anything below 2003. That GM car is more reliable.

What do you mean sort through 10,000 threads? Are you trying to be smart, or are you just stupid?

I just searched 'buying my first jaguar' and in less than 3 minutes I got these which all have the same title as your thread with over 12 pages of responses!

A 2001 S-type? I wouldn't if I were you, my old matey! It's gotta be dirt cheap to be interesting, and if anything serious needs replacing, it won't be worth it, then you'll have a write-off on your hands. Keep your money in your wallet for now...

If I read the word 'stupid' again, someone (or a couple of you) will be getting infractions. Now, play nice and continue.

Good luck matt on your search!

I got It. it was dirt cheap because a rich old lady had it,lol. I gave $6000 cash. took it to my local jag dealer and everything checks out no problems runs perfect. I drove 3 hours to pick it up so I got a long test drive on way home, lol. I love it. It looks like its off the showroom floor 100% perfect condition. Should I give it a tune up? I do all my own work on all my cars. plugs dont look to be too bad to do ?? lol

CONGRATULATIONS! Now I'm going to sound like a broken record....Spend some serious time reading through here on the major repair areas. Also, do yourself a favor and get a JTIS cd. Ebay lists them all the time just search for S Type Service Manual..Not the most perfect thing but well worth the approximately 10 bucks you'll spend. Since it is an early car, it has a Ford trans so a service is cheap. Did she give you a service history? Also, based on VIN, you can get a complete dealer service history if you ask real nice.....That way you know what trouble areas have been addressed. After that, I would gather up the minor concern area parts and go over it real well..New IMT O-rings, new intake gaskets, new coils, etc. It will cost up front but there is no better way to see how the car is than going deep into it servicing these items. Do that and it should be good...

I did the same, got rid of a very nice 94 SLS...loved the car but the miles were getting up there and I wanted/needed a change. Just got an 03 Stype/under 100K with all the options/color/motor I wanted. It's being delivered a week from today. I hope it is as good as the caddy I had. I had two caddy's and loved them,,,spent lots of money on the 86 Eldo Barritz and not a whole lot on the 94 sls,,,so we will see what this pretty kitty will do. Hope you find a nice one too. It has many more miles than the 94 had when I got it, however. I'll keep watching your posts to see what you acquire.
