Default Buying a STR

Hi Jag Forums!

Long story short my 1994 xj40 keeps giving me problems so i am looking into buying a 2005 S-type R at a jaguar dealer here in Florida. I just wanted to write this thread to ask all S type owners how they like there STR. Any know problems? Also the car i'm looking at is in amazing shape with only 55,200 miles, but is $16,200 alittle pricey?

That's about $4k more than that car will sell for. They go all day on ebay for $8-12k for a good one with that kind of mileage. I would wait out the dealer or offer them something a lot less than their asking price.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I test drove the car last weekend but wanted to do more research before i signed any papers. It was a amazing car to drive! I called the dealer today and put in a offer of $14,500. They said they would call me back.
Also the car has been sitting on there lot for over a month now, you think they would be happy someone wants to buy it.

Yes, that is pricey. $12500 would be much more like it.

Since you only called the dealer, there's nothing in writing. Some things to ask when you next call to reduce your offer...
1.. How many owners?
2.. Any accidents?
3.. Full service records?
4.. Any outstanding recalls?
5.. Age of tires? (should not be more than 4 years)
6.. Full check of Heating and Cooling systems - has DCCV been changed?
7.. Age of battery? (less than 5 years), voltage 12 hrs after charging s/b 12.5+
8.. 3-month warranty?

Like others are saying, your offer should be closer to $12k... assuming it has no issues...

RobinB's advice is good, also, go over this list of known issues I made here:

Hardly anyone knows there even is a car called an S-Type R or that it's 400HP. However, they may vaguely know a Jaguar is an import and be aware of its (now out of date) reputation.

yes, sad but true... you arnt really going to find anyone outside of this forum that would have ever even heard of one.... that being said if its a low miler like that and one or 2 owner car the dealer isnt to out of line.....its an awesome car especially for the money......and everyone who sees it will think its worth a whole lot more..... if its clean clean clean id do $13-14k soon as you drive it off it will drop 2k though

i paid 12.5 k for mine at the beginning of the yr with 78k miles....plus 24 mo bumper to bumper warranty that was transferred....depends on the area and availability......

Well, I am partial to Jag Racing Green, and it looks good to me!

If it is 1 owner and never had any accidents or wheel rash repairs, that indicates lots of TLC. With those new tires and a negotiated one-year extended warranty, $14,500 sounds OK to me.

But then, I love Jag Racing Green...

If its worth paying more to you, then go for it. Its your money, if you think the car is worth $14k to you, then you aren't overpaying.

Tough choice. You could pass on it because it might be $2k over market but really if you are set on an STR you may not ever find one as good because they are not too common.

Two years ago I paid Sunnyvale CA Ford dealer $14k for my 2005 STR with 58,000 miles. I think they a sticker price printed at $17,500 but had just lowered the price to $14k because it had been on the lot for a month plus.

Check what year Nav DVD is in it, located in the trunk. If its an 05 DVD you will need to upgrade it unless you don't mind not finding anything built since 05. A newer DVD is around 120.00 on Ebay. On the price of the car, I have a 2005 STR with 62K miles, had 57K when I bough it, payed 15k total for it, in my opinion well worth it. One previous owner, zero accidents. I love the car, its powerful, and definitely unique. Very few STRs out there, I myself haven't seen one in months! That Green STR does look nice!
