Default A/C suddenly stopped blowing cold

I was driving home yesterday and it was 102F outside, but the A/C was working fine, then all of a sudden, no more cold air and soon very hot air was coming in the side vents and warm air was coming in the driver side center vent and cooler air was coming in the passenger side center vent.

Can anyone tell me what to look for ?

Thanks in advance

I suppose it would be worth checking the a/c has its charge (gas) still - in case it's suddenly leaked. Otherwise, top suspect DCCV.......

jagv8-

My wife's S-Type is having the same problem. We changed the DCCV last year. We're about 100 miles from the dealer. Could a competent Ford mechanic check the frean level before I trek that distance?

Thanks.

Any a/c guy can check. It's a normal a/c system. Ford will likely be a bit expensive and quite likely just get an a/c guy in. Or you could get some gauges and DIY but I know that wouldn't suit plenty of people. If you plan to do that be sure to read up on safety as the gas is poisonous/noxious and you need to take appropriate care.

In case you plan to get a regular a/c guy, some can cope better with the electrical side of the system than others. If you can find someone OK with that they might appreciate the electrical diagrams (from JTIS etc). Again, it's a normal a/c system at heart, with the usual cut-out switches etc so any competent tech can be right at home.

Thanks. I had a sense of that but didn't want to get trapped by some strange measurement or adjustment...a furlongs per fortnight sort of thing.

Well....the saga ends.

Today I left the house to go to a shop to have them evacute the freon and then replace it. Would have cost about $125.

On the way, the A/C tripped from recirc mode to allowing outside air to come in. It does this automatically about 15 minutes after the engine is started. I thought about this as I drove and BINGO! It came to me. Joan was driving for about 45 minutes. The A/C will usually lower the temp of air passing over the coil about 15-20 degrees. When she was driving it switched out of recirc mode and suddenly 80 degree air was entering the cabin. By the time she got home, she'd been driving in 80 degree air for 30 minutes. She also turned the fan to manual and set it on high. It was a blast furnace.

I set it to stay in Recirc mode and drove around with the system set to "Lo" and in automatic. After about 10 minutes, you could have hung meat in the cabin.

I drove home and re-trained the user. Problem solved.

Yeah, ... I know that but the principal driver wasn't making the connection between the little red light going out and the air getting warmer.

Candidly, I can't understand why on earth Jaguar designed it to turn off automatically. I'm a big boy and can decide when I do or do not want the A/C to recirculate.

I'm confused as to why it didn't kick back on? Or am I missing something? On Auto the system should maintain cabin temps and humidity automagically right? By changing the recirculate, vents, fans, and temp right?

For example, I was driving on the interstate, AC on Auto, the recirculate shut off after a while, then when I got into traffic stop n go, it switched back to recirculate. The fan speed changed as well several times through the drive, higher, lower, higher. This was a 98*f day, humid as hell. (yuk!)

What I will say is that on Auto in the mornings, my windshield will condensate on the outside. (This sucks) So I usally have to switch to manual vents so the AC don't blow on windshielf. But I've read others post that they have NEVER had any fogging, or condensation.

When my AC stops blowing cold I found the compressor clutch stops coming on. I'm still trying to find the cause. I know now the problem is electrical.

Not necessarily electrical. Your freon level could be low enough to prevent the clutch from engaging. (leak somewhere in AC system) You can always check associated fuses and relay(s) related to the A/C clutch to rule out electrical.
