I'm ordering a rack from rackdoctor.com. There are 2 options. Ford Gear and a ZF Gear. I have a 2000 S-type 3.0. I'm pretty sure its the Ford Gear but rackdoctor couldn't tell me by my VIN.

Any idea how I can find out? I don't own a lift, but I could jack the car up if needed.

if i had to guess id say the early cars used ford, the same as the gearbox, with the later cars using zf

 

2000MY S-Types used the Ford racks and sometime in 2001 onward had ZF installed.
I think the changeover VIN is L86902. If your car is earlier then you have the Ford rack.
The Ford racks are difficult to 'bleed' the air from the system. A vacuum tool was issued to the dealers and TSBs referenced the JTIS section for the procedure.

And there ya have it Rob! An uncommon question...I was glad to see Bob had given you a reputable response.

 

Also check to see if your rack has the electrical sensor on the rack (DSC) or not - I remember having to confirm this before ordering my rack - I do believe it would be a Ford rack as well...
