Default Driving With the Rear Wheels

One thing I've noticed about driving my S-Type in a somewhat spirited manner is that it handles better when I load up the rear wheels. I don't burn up the back tires by any means but I tend to throttle steer to get the car nicely balanced. I was curious if other S-Type owners noticed this trait.

Most RWD cars I've owned felt better in tight corners with some throttle.

It's almost sad now few RWD cars there are these days. Stupid, cheap, FWD!

I've never had that sort of sensation, but it handles better than any car that I've ever owned, and I've never tested it's limits.

A major reason I bought my Jag was the fact that it is a RWD car that I got on the cheap. The car doesn't have the power to do more than lay a small strip on the asphalt, but I love the way the car drives.

I agree that the more aggressively you drive it, the better it feels. I need to see if stepping on the gas makes a difference. I believe it does. I think that subconsciously I step on it into corners.

Mike,

Yes indeed, a little rear-end weight helps a bit. Long live rear-wheel drive....

I was always taught, from a young child on, that you go into a corner off the gas, and accelerate through the corner. It's always worked for me.

Yep, always works for me, get it sorted before the turn, keep the gas on even when I've thought I was going a little too quickly and I've always come out the other side facing the right direction. At times I've lifted off and could feel the car become unstable, back on that pedal and keeping the faith has never let me down.

RWD does have at least one advantage in snowy conditions, the ability to swing the rear end out. I don't necessarily recommend this as an everyday technique but last winter I did a U-Turn by turning hard left and then hit the gas pedal which swung the rear end out a fair bit. When it was at the correct position I let off the gas and then proceeded down the road.
