Engine Compatibility/replacement for 2008 3.0
Hi , I'm new to this forum and having a jaguar. I just bought a 2008 S-type 3.0 V6 car with 50,000 thousand miles . Car was running excellent and a ticking/knocking noise started. By the time I was able to pull over and turned the car off, it sounded like something snapped inside the engine and the car stop running. So I'm guessing I have major damage, at the very best a damaged head and at the worst a whole bad engine.? I been looking for matching engines and I can not find anything for my year to mach. I know the engine is similar on earlier years and perhaps some models (or other brands, sort of on the engine design). .... My question is what years or engine variations will fit to replace my current engine if that is the case, with out having to make small changes? I live in Hawaii so my resources are limited and will have to figure out shipping as well as not t many do it after calling.
On the vin # it has the 8th letter as "A" not sure what that designates but I know when I look engine compatibility engines list the 8th letter code.
Aloha

Thank you for the information. I did my homework and that is what I thought about the engine since it also had lower mileage, unfortunately I had it for an hour! I bought it at an salvage auto auction and it was a charity sale, classified as minor body work and not engine damage. The car looked great and taken care, it sounded excellent when I picked it up and drove it towards the port to ship to my island..... I think i found a few low mile engines in mainland but it will be expensive and I know I'm undertaking a big job, but the wife is really angry already so I have to find a solution. I won't even get $1000 if I sell it 'as is" here.....So my only option
is going with the same year engine then? Aloha

Wow...what a slap in the face....i would start by getting the cam covers off, if you can, and see if a timing chain broke...that will give you a starting point...or it may be easier to remove the oil pan and look from below..i am not real familiar with the v6...i am not sure, but i think ford used the same engine in a few of their cars ...there will be some members with vast knowledge on the v6 to offer further advice i am sure...whatever you do, do not crank the engine anymore even though some damage has been done...if there is no hole in the block or pan, that is a big plus...i cannot say i know how you feel, because i don't....but there is hope with the experience of many on this forum to lean on

i does not have to be the same year engine .
any small changes will be ancillary and electrical i.e sensor and wiring changes amongst the later models .
that you can easily swap to your replacement long block from your old one .
it would pay to stay within your specific face lift if possible .
so late 05 to 08 . at least that will widen your search .
i'm sure the 03-05 engine will be the same . but you will then need to swap looms and sensors .
so a little extra work .

Ouch! Fingers crossed the problem is something simple.
As an example, years ago I had a Fiat 124 Spyder convertible. One beautiful spring day, I got into a little impromptu race with an MGB and wound out the engine. Bam! It made a sudden lurch and I had to coast to the side of the road.
I did some quick roadside troubleshooting and convinced myself the timing belt had jumped. It was an interference engine, so I further convinced myself the engine was now an expensive paperweight.
In disgust, I had the car towed home and I pushed it into the back of the shop. I didn’t touch it for months until I finally summoned the courage to investigate. Turns out the distributor rotor had broke in two. $3 and I was back in business. Doh!
Here’s hoping you find something equally simple. Keep us posted.

Hi , I been working on the engine for the past two weekends at a friends shop, I'm just waiting to borrow a cherry picker (crane) to take out the engine. I tried turning the engine and eventually turned over but seems like something is stuck and on the way. So I'm thinking it will need anew engine. Hopefully this weekend I can finally take it out and take a better look before I commit to purchasing the engine.

Engine replacement
Well it looks like I will be replacing the engine sadly! My timing chain was fine and so were my guides. I had a broken piston from the skirt and the rod was broken digging into the cylinder wall, the metal plate on the rod was missing and the other cylinders places were starting to scratch. I am not sure what made it happen, it had oil and it was not overheating. So maybe the timing was off or it jumped? Car had a nice service history and only 54,000. I got an engine on the way with 35,000 supposedly if they are honest. I think I disconnected more stuff than I needed but I been learning lots hopefully in case I need to do any repairs in the future. Any suggestions on what things to change while I'm at it and have all that room and access?
