Default Error Codes P1383 & P1584

Hi all,

I bought a 4.0l Stype today and the EML light was on.

I pulled the codes and got:-
P1383 - Pending
P1584

Any ideas what they are and what I can do to fix them?

Other idea is Search as probably been suffered by some poor soul before!

P1383 is the VVT Solenoid (passenger side) - over retarded I believe. I would get some engine flush and let it do it's thing and change oil and filter - ASAP. 5W30 oil is OK - or you can go with 5W20 as well. If you want you can sub 1 qt oil with trans fluid (Dexron V) - trans fluid is highly detergent and this helps to keep the narrow oil passages in the VVT unit clear.

Hi all,

Update -

Today I had some engine flush put tthrough and the oil and filter changed, so fingers crossed there.

Whilst I was there, I noticed a slight blow from the exhaust centre pipe on the drivers side, so that was done too and the tracking was also checked and adjusted.

I'm hoping the oil and filter has sorted my problem. I'll keep you informed.

Hi all,

I have another update on this, but not a happy one

I had an engine flush and oil and filter change yesterday and all was ok for the day afterwards. However, I went out for a spin today for a test drive and the Engine Management Light came on again.

I pulled the codes and got:-









Can anyone help?
These errors look seemingly unrelated and the performance of the car is not affected in any way?

Perhaps I should just cover the light. LOL.

use Search
oh - post #2
fix engine-related before any others

13 years old and some faults - not a shock, really - probably very fixable

Hi all,

I've got another update which seems really weird.

Normally, the EML comes on at roughly the same place on the way to work, which made me think it was something to do with the warm up process.
Well, today, I started the car and let it idle whilst I cleared off the frost. Sure enough, the EML came on before I got to my usual place, which leads me to believe, even more so now, that something is throwing out codes during warm up....or am I just crazy?

Any ideas.

Have you cleared the codes and seen what comes back?
You really need to see the same codes multiple times before I trust them.

Regarding the P1383 code - do understand - the issue may take time to clear itself. Hopefully you subbed 1 qt trans fluid for oil

Thanks for the reply.

No, I didn't put a quart of transmission fluid in with the oil. I'm a bit worried about putting transmission fluid in my engine.

Is it definitely Ok?
