Default Exhaust manifold broken?

Recently had my car on the hoist to change a rear tie rod. On the drive home car makes a weird clunk noise then starts running rough. Did my friend really place the lift to close to the cats and damage the poor old beast? Has anyone had to change the exhaust manifolds on a 4.0? Don’t want to blame em but I know the exhaust was getting brittle and lifting from the engine cradle leaves little room for error. Might part her out just shy of 400 000km. For 20 years she was my daily. Driven hard and was as durable a car I could’ve asked for. Going to be tough she was a lot of fun

The car was not lifted at the points Jaguar says to use? Not sure when you mentioned the engine cradle.
Hopefully you can take a look and it "might" be something simple so wait until you can inspect the under side of the car.

No it’s been lifted from the front & rear sub frame for years. I trust him since he’s a good friend but this time he may have placed it on the exhaust? Cars been through a lot in this harsh Canadian climate. I will look into it soon but from what I gather the last couple days is that there are leaks all throughout the cats and pipes now. Not driven it much all winter but the couple times I did drive her there wasn’t anything noticeable. Can’t be coincidence can it? Thx for the response I will definitely not put my other s types at risk by lifting from the frame.

Timing chain faults?
4.0 engines had/have timing chain tensioner problems.

Yea idk all I smell is exhaust no clattering from the chain but it’s probably well over due. Car was purchased two decades ago so they’re probably original. Going to investigate further but for now I need to detox my lungs lol

If you find a cat or exhaust pipe damaged, replacement wasn’t that bad. Here’s my experience with an’02 V6:

Replaced coils and she’s back running decent but the exhaust definitely wasn’t happy with the lift. It’s going to need some tlc for sure especially the cats. Can’t believe how much abuse the beast can take. Do those exhaust patch kits actually work or should I start looking at bone yards for replacements?

Not sure what just happened but cars been sitting for a few weeks. Start her and bang all I hear is a loud back fire. Eventually starts but it’s running rough. Drive for a bit and she idles smooth. After sitting idle car shows battery light and goes into open loop and runs a bit shaky. Banks are both too lean(p174 code). Manifold leak would be my first guess because I know the exhaust has seen better days but has anyone experienced this where the car goes from open to closed loop and back and forth. Not sure what the loud back fire was on startup either. Long term trims go up higher than I’ve ever seen. Short terms too. It’s definitely sensor and or exhaust related but I’m wondering could the backfire have been the manifold exploding ?

My similar experience with my '02 V6:

IIRC, that wayward elbow was on the vacuum sense line from the fuel pressure regulator.

Finally had some time to go digging around and didn’t find any vacuum leaks but definitely there’s a hissing sound coming from the exhaust manifold or intake manifold(passenger side). Fuel Trims are sky high and it appears the hissing sound is lower so I’ll squirt some soapy water around the exhaust manifold next chance I get. When the car gets going it runs well even though fuel trims are sky high , but if I sit idle for a minute it stalls. I’m convinced the exhaust cracked or let loose but could it cause the car to stall when idle and fuel trims skyrocket?

Do you have a smoke machine or access to one? My pickup recently failed an emissions test due to an exhaust leak causing a very lean reading (non-OBD, tailpipe sniffer in use). I hooked up my smoke machine to the tailpipe (with an expandable plug to block the rest of the opening) and quickly found a hole.

I doubt the soapy water trick would work as pressure is very low inside the exhaust system, so there is virtually no difference to ambient. The heat will likely boil off the water before any bubbles could form, too.

Thanks again Karl. Always right on the money. Vacuum line under engine cover where I had been sealing up coil covers came undone. Still need to go through the exhaust with some jb weld putty and get everything sealed up. The beast mobile lives on.

Regarding the exhaust leaks. I can see the two rectangle cut out on the cats leaking pretty bad can I throw some putty on them?
