Welcome to the forum Steve,

You will have to get the codes checked to see what triggered the failsafe mode and post the results before anyone can help.

In the meantime you might want to post in the New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum

Hi Steve. Did you happen to drive in a hard rain? The "S" electrical system is susceptible to intrusion of moisture. Check the state of battery charge. Even with a weak cell, the batttery will start the motor but not dliver adequate power for the electronics. Check the above then report back.

Hi, I have a same prob. 99 S type 3lt. Fail safe mode goes on and off at will. Most of the time it's off. Had it checked for faults, but there are none showing! Trevor.

It can only flag codes if certain things are the case (see codes PDF in stickies / JTIS and read up on OBD if you want the quite complicated details).

Things to do: check battery / replace if oldish, check for damp (boot/trunk, coils, PCM maybe), check LTFTs (long term fuel trims) at idle & 2500rpm in Park because they'll show if you have an air leak. Report back in due course if stuck.

All... first check the battery as pointed above.

if the battery is 3 years or older - time to invest in a new one...

Second the battery comments and you have to get one of the better batteries out there. Do not go cheap with the battery. Can cause to many issues.
