Gas cap warning woes.
OK, back to my gas cap woes. To re-cap (so to speak) (Car is 2008 4.2 NA).
1. Got gas cap warning -- no CEL.
2. Changed to new cap, Error message was P0456. Cleared it to see if cap was issue.
3. P0456 returned this time with CEL.
4. Read forum warnings that "all caps are not created equal".
5. Reinstalled new cap w/silicone grease.
6. P0456 eventually returned but no CEL.
7. Ordered OEM cap.
8. Went to change cap: one I had installed came apart in my hand and had to use needle nose pliers to unscrew.
9. New "OEM" turned out to be for a Range Sport -- which my wife has so will keep.
10. SO,,, my question. Where can I ACTUALLY purchase an OEM gas cap? Would a certified Jag dealer have these, or which of the online sellers can be trusted to really sell me a genuine gas cap?
Thanks!

Your fuel cap is here, item #1:
https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.../brand/jaguar/
Looks like you would need Jaguar part #XR854779. You can get it directly from Jaguar via the link above, or search online with that part number for other vendors.
As far as the warning message, the cap may not be the root cause. If I understand Jaguar's logic, when a P0456 code (EVAP system minor leak) is generated, the computer is programmed to warn you the gas cap isn't sealing properly. Take a look at this chart and you will see there are many possibilities for a P0456, and not just the gas cap:

If a new gas cap doesn't cure the problem, investigate the rest of the EVAP system. A smoke test may be needed to check for leaks.

OK, finally got the OEM gas cap, and will report back after I've driven around a bit. Just didn't want to leave a thread to die. However, one thing interesting maybe worth commenting... The OEM and the cheap one I tried looked exactly alike. But there was one difference: turning the non-OEM to three clicks gave me three, identical, amounts of resistance. The first two clicks of the OEM were same as the imitator, but the third click gave a lot more resistance guessing that meant it went on a lot tighter! Maybe that makes sense. Know soon.
