Contrary to what you have been told, the 5R55N gearbox should have a periodic filter and fluid change to restore performance. In addition, if the gearbox has any leaks, loss of fluid can lead to performance issues and eventual damage.
Search this forum as there is a wealth of information on this gearbox and how to service it yourself if you have the equipment and tools.

Agreed.
The sealed for life is a silly thing (being polite for a change), and down here, the vehicles with that nonsense are having the trans fluid/filter changed at around the 80K kms mark.
Grubby fluid will reek havoc with that Ford transmission.

About 6 years ago I found Jaguar already had a fluid change for the autobox (i.e. not sealed for life) on their site but apparently some dealers still have not noticed!!
Oh well, just change it and make sure to get the new level right

Funny how the word hasn't filtered down to the masses. TWO independent and one dealership shops gave me the "sealed for life" spiel....either because it is really the case, or because they did not want to perform the work.
Or, they're more interested in trying to get me into a XF.
Logically, if it has fluid, it has a filter. If it has a filter, it will need to be changed. So will the fluid.

Quite. Many of the dealers (franchises) just want to sell cars. And do a bit of very routine servicing at big prices.
Their interest in a quite old model that's not been made since 2007 is low, especially as many probably do not themselves service the transmission but if they had to would use a trans shop (and probably charge double what the shop charged).
Translation: "sealed for life" (which Jaguar do not say) = "we're not interested" (at a franchise).
I suspect that for 10+ year old cars the tale would be similar for other makes. It's what indy shops rely on.
